Shanxi Art Vocational College was formerly the Shanxi Provincial Art School founded in 1951. Liqun, a people's artist and famous printmaker, was the first principal. In 1958, Shanxi Art Institute was upgraded to undergraduate level. Since then, it has been divided and merged several times, and its name has been changed several times. In 1998, it merged with Shanxi Film School to form Shanxi Culture and Art School.
In 2000, it was jointly restructured with Shanxi Workers’ College of Arts into Shanxi Art Vocational College. It was the first higher vocational art college in the country.
