This is the moving story of a young boy whose love for the art of ballet ultimately leads him to overcome poverty and prejudice to realize his dream. prejudice and realize his dream.

The 11-year-old boy, Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell), is the son of a coal miner and has lived with his father and older brother since he was a child in a small town in the north of England. He goes to weekly boxing training sessions. One day, during his training class, he stumbles upon ballet, a beautiful art that immediately captivates him, and the boy also catches the eye of his strict ballet instructor, Mrs. Wilkinson (Julie Walters), who finds Billy to be a rare and extremely talented ballet prodigy. Mrs. Wilkinson has an overly caustic sharp tongue and always has a cigarette in her hand, but when she sees that Billy has such rare dancing potential, she too becomes intensely interested in him. She even gave up her other female ballet students to train Billy full time.

However, Billy's ballet studies have always been hidden from his celibate father (Gary Lewis) and tyrannical older brother (Jamie Draven). A labor strike at the mine has them struggling to put food on the table. When they finally realize that Billy has wasted his tuition money for boxing lessons on unmanly ballet, a family conflict inevitably erupts.

Billy's grandmother (Joan Haywood) also disapproves of him taking ballet lessons. So he can only find a modicum of comfort from his best friend Michael (Stuart Wells), which further deepens the friendship between the two.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Wilkinson also encourages Billy to enroll in the Royal Ballet School in London, where she believes he can get better training and escape the pressures of his home environment.

Billy, however, was caught up in the contradiction between his responsibility to his family and the realization of his own ideals, but he ultimately chose the latter, because his love for ballet was irresistible to him, and ballet was his passion, but also his destiny.
