Analysis of Guo Lianghui's Works

Guo Lianghui's works are realistic and have a deep understanding of women. While praising morality, innocence, care and tolerance, it also exposes selfishness, vulgarity, cruelty and fraud.

Guo Lianghui's Heart Lock (1962) was banned shortly after it was published in Taiwan Province Province, on the grounds that it should be written about incest. The Taiwan Province Federation of Literary and Art Circles also seriously expelled her from membership, and it was not until recent years that her membership was restored. "Heart Lock" caused such a big storm. As a result, during the period of being banned, piracy in Taiwan Province Province and Hongkong became more fierce, and Guo Lianghui became healthier. The function of literary works should not be limited to the moral evaluation of the characters in the book. We can know that society through the characters and story lines in the works. It is through the stories of these characters in the novel that Heart Lock shows the readers the confusion and depravity of the youth in Taiwan Province Province in the 1960s under the impact of western modern thoughts, as well as the true portrayal of the social family, ethics, beliefs and human desires on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. When the author created the character Qi Dan, he did not simply deny her, but made her step by step into the abyss of sin through delicate psychological description, both willing and unwilling; When we are freed from the abyss of sin, we are both willing and unwilling. In this complicated contradiction, Marco Lin and Jiang Mengshi, two external forces, played a very important role when she walked into the abyss of evil. But when she was freed from the abyss, her mother's external force was minimal, and religion was powerless. Besides, only his mother believed in Christianity, and Qi Dan never converted to Jesus Christ. So at the end of the novel, she walks into the church and hears Pastor Zhao recite "Father, forgive them because they don't know what they have done". What can she do? Doesn't she know what Qi Dan did? Guo Lianghui is good at writing urban love stories, and most of her novels describe social life and reveal various emotional crux. The emotional life of the female world in her works, whether praise, condemnation or sympathy, is out of sincerity, which also implies her views and value judgments on love and marriage. "Late Spring" and "Oblique Smoke" are both tragedies written by pure women who have devoted themselves to love, because the author hopes that "there is really pure love in the world that has devoted themselves to love, sacrificed and has no regrets". With the growth of experience and the deepening of understanding of social life, she realized that although love exists, it is not illusory and blind, and love is sometimes combined with sex. Heart Lock is the representative of this kind of works. The works reveal the destructive power of distorted and repressed love and lust on personality.

Guo Lianghui also found in his observation of life that even in contemporary society, people's traditional concepts have not completely faded. To some extent, women are still the "wife's helper" that men expect. Their ability and shrewdness in work are not liked by men, and the success of women's career often pays a heavy price. The Long Road is about the emotional loss of successful women. Luo Chaonan is a female lawyer. She works hard and seems serious, but she cares about everyone she knows and is familiar with, but she has always been alone. She said with deep feelings: "A person who is particularly successful in some aspects may fail miserably in others." Tells the contradiction between women's career and love. Another kind of Guo Lianghui's works is to explore the troubles of love and marriage to women in the open era. The collection of short stories "Taipei Women" is called "Bitterness" by the author, which describes the loneliness of contemporary urban women, including the loneliness of unmarried, married, abandoned wives and widows. The female world in Guo Lianghui's works is full of troubles and worries. She has been thinking about the way out for women, but failed to find the root, that is, women should be human first, then women, and insist on a meaningful life, not just sex.
