The origin of this song: Scarborough Fair was originally an ancient Scottish riddle song. The so-called "riddle songs" refer to those songs that are widely circulated among the people, but the author is unknown, and the original tune has changed greatly because people sing with each other. Later, the British folk singer Martin Carthy added his own re-creation (especially the beautiful guitar accompaniment) to the original song, and turned it into a very beautiful love song. 1964- 1965 Paul spent a holiday in England and often sang in English folk circles. After learning this song, he rewrote the lyrics and songs.
We first learned about Scarborough Fair because of an episode of the American film The Graduate. This film was very popular among American college students at that time, and so were this song and The Sound of Silence. In fact, Simon and garfinkel's album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme came out at the end of 1966. The film "The Graduate" 1967 was released, and two episodes were absorbed into the drama series.
The lyrics are as follows:
Scarborough fair
Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, where there are parsley, sage, mistletoe and thyme,
Say hello to a person who lives there, say hello to a girl there,
She was my true love. She used to be the one in my heart.
Tell her to make a linen shirt for me and tell her to sew a shirt for me.
On the edge of a green hill deep in the forest.
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, where there are parsley, sage, mistletoe and thyme,
The sparrow's trail on the snow-crowned palm (tits chasing in the snow-covered forest)
There are no seams or needlework, and all joints have to be sewn by hand.
Blankets and sheets (Dashan's child) (Dashan's son is covered with a military blanket)
Then she will be my true love. She used to be the one in my heart.
(I don't know when I sleep) (I can't hear the big horn when I sleep)
Tell her to find me an acre of land and tell her to choose a piece of land for me.
There is a fallen leaf on the hillside.
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, where there are parsley, sage, mistletoe and thyme,
(Wash the grave with silver tears) (Tears twinkle beside the grave)
Between the sea and the beach, just between the sea and the beach,
(A soldier is cleaning his gun) (A soldier is cleaning his weapon)
Then she will be my true love. Then she will be my sweetheart.
Tell her to harvest with a sickle, tell her to harvest with a sickle,
The war was raging in the bloody rain. The roar of the battle came from the bloody camp.
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, where there are parsley, sage, mistletoe and thyme,
The generals ordered their soldiers to kill and fight for a certain goal.
Collect them into a bunch of heather, and then bind all the crops with a bunch of heather.
For a reason they have long forgotten.
Then she will be my true love. Then she will be my sweetheart.
(I don't know when I sleep) (I can't hear the big horn when I sleep)
Are you going to Scarborough Fair? Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme, where there are parsley, sage, mistletoe and thyme,
Say hello to a person who lives there, say hello to a girl there,
She was my true love. She used to be the one in my heart.
There are different versions of this song according to the translator or singer.
1. The name of the song sung by Zhang Mingmin was "The Graduate", and the lyrics were re-filled, perhaps to match the theme of the film, or influenced by the popularity of folk songs on the Taiwanese campus at that time. The lyrics are as follows:
The south wind in the cicada singing blows the phoenix flowers on campus, and they are full of infinite feelings of parting. They are yet I feel the harmonious heart-beat of the Sacred Unicorn, and their teachers are as deep as the sea.
Recalling the tears of the wanderer who dreamed of returning to his old home in the middle of the night when he left home, he was resting on his most unforgettable parents' kindness.
I still remember the sunshine everywhere, the cold wind and the biting rain. Whether it is a happy day or a frustrated day, it is the warmest and best friendship.
In the blessing, I silently recalled that the piano was singing. Don't hesitate, don't hesitate again, my good man, Peng Cheng is thousands of miles away.
2. Sarah. Bleiman's cover, the lyrics are in English, but only the lyrics of Simon's lead singer, not the lyrics of garfinkel Choir. Garfinkel's chorus shows the theme of anti-war. Without this part, it is a pure love song.
3. It was built by Cui Jian, Dong Wenhua and others, and I have never heard of it.
There are two kinds of translation of lyrics, one is literal translation, and the other is the translation of The Book of Songs. The translation of the Book of Songs mentioned above is said to have been done by a man named Lian Po. It seems that he has been studying in China in the United States and should be in the United States now. "Scarborough Fair is an old song I like very much. Because it is not so American, because its singing voice is deep and bitter. I always feel that there is a subtle fit with the Book of Songs, although one is BC and the other is the fairy queen. Its melody, like a breeze, mingled with the bitterness, coldness and fragrance of weeds and wild flowers, passed slowly on the earth. I saw a man in white shaking Mu Duo, calling for the sky while walking, and collecting dreams between the endless earth and the village. It's really hard to forget, but this inexplicable association. I really like being in a foreign civilization, and I can find the charm of ancient China that breaks my heart. This song is very similar in structure to many poems in The Book of Songs. The second and fourth sentences of the first paragraph are repeated in subsequent paragraphs. This reciprocating feature is also obvious in The Book of Songs. The second reason lies in a series of flowers and plants inexplicably appearing in the song: parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. I tried to turn it over in the format of the Book of Songs and fill it in the original song, but I can sing. " The lyrics are as follows:
what do you think? Are you going to Scarborough Fair?
Cymbidium coriander, coriander, sage, rosemary and thyme
Another lady, your message, give it to someone who lives there for me.
She was my true love.
Tell her to make me a linen shirt.
Cymbidium coriander, coriander, sage, rosemary and thyme
Don't use needle scissors. Without seams or needles, there will be no gaps or defects.
Where is the Iraqi? Comfort me and think she will be my true love.
Chorus: The shadow of another mountain, on the dark green hillside.
Looking for winter carpets, old birds and swallows trace brown sparrows in the snow crown.
Snow covered the fields and the mountains were dull.
I fell asleep unconsciously, and the cold was crisp and hissed.
Tell her to find me an acre of land.
Cymbidium coriander, coriander, sage, rosemary and thyme
Built on fertile land, between salt water and seashore.
Iraqis should be there. Let me see each other. Then she will be my true love.
Chorus: The shadow of another mountain, with sparse leaves, moss erosion and lush leaves on the hillside.
Wash the grave with slender tears.
Yesterday, I used my sword to clean a soldier's gun that was polished every day.
Silent and unconscious, cold and long, sleeping without knowing the sound of the horn.
Tell her to harvest with sadness.
Cymbidium coriander, coriander, sage, rosemary and thyme
Get together, don't abandon, don't lose all gathered in a bunch of heather.
The Iraqi is still there, but I swear she will be my true love.
Chorus: the bonfire is whistling, and the bloody teacher is a war roaring in the bloody rain.
A general has an order, a diligent king has a general ordering their soldiers to kill and fight.
Why fight? For a reason that they have forgotten for a long time, they forgot its purpose.
Ignorance, cold and sadness, sleeping, unaware of the sound of the horn
