Translation of the ancient poem
The grass is green beside the river, and the willows are luxuriant in the garden. Upstairs the beautifully groomed woman stood in front of the window, her white skin comparable to the bright moon. She was beautifully dressed and stretched out her slender fingers.
Once she had been a dancer and a singer, but now she was the wife of a ranger who loved to roam the countryside. Her wandering husband had not yet returned, and it was hard to bear the loneliness of being alone in this empty house, how could she stay alone!
Composition background:
This poem is a boudoir grudge work envisioned on behalf of a thinking woman, one of the Nineteen Ancient Poems, and the exact time of its composition is unknown. There are various theories about the period background of the Nineteen Ancient Poems.
Yuwen Shoan argues that early Chinese poetry was a replicated system, and that there is no conclusive evidence that the "Nineteen Ancient Poems" predate the Jian'an period. Muzai suggested that the 19 Ancient Poems and most of the important components of Jian'an poetry were written by Cao Zhi.
