1994 10.08 officially put forward the concept of "pearl river delta" for the first time, and the Guangdong provincial party Committee proposed to build the pearl river delta and establish the pearl river delta economic zone at the third plenary session of the seventh central Committee. The "Pearl River Delta" was originally composed of seven cities (excluding Hong Kong and Macao): Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Zhongshan and Jiangmen. Later, the scope of the "Pearl River Delta" was adjusted to an area consisting of nine cities along the Pearl River, namely Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Foshan, Zhuhai, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Huizhou, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing, which is commonly known as the "Pearl River Delta" or the "Pearl River Delta Economic Zone". The "Little Pearl River Delta" covers an area of 24,437 square kilometers, less than 14% of the land area of Guangdong Province, with a population of 42.83 million, accounting for 6 1% of the population of Guangdong Province. In 2008, the total GDP of the "Little Pearl River Delta" reached 2,974.558 billion yuan (US$ 434.284 billion), accounting for 65.438+00% of the whole country. On June 8th, 2009, 65438 the State Council issued the Outline of the Reform and Development Plan for the Pearl River Delta Region (2008-2020). The East Wing of Guangdong Province refers to Shantou, Chaozhou, Jieyang and Shanwei, which are located on the eastern coast of Guangdong Province and are the "East Gate" of Guangdong Province. The land area is 15675.6 square kilometers.
