These days, a lot of discussions about ibuprofen suddenly appeared in the circle of friends. Ibuprofen can cause permanent injury or even death, and some foreign manufacturers have made an emergency recall. The implication is that it is best not to take this medicine.

What happened to ibuprofen?

In fact, it is not one thing, but three things: the recall of ibuprofen, the death of ibuprofen, and the safety of ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen recall

On 29th of this year 1 month, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that Tris Pharma Pharmaceutical Company of New Jersey voluntarily recalled six batches of ibuprofen oral suspension.

None of these six batches of drugs were imported from China, which means that they had nothing to do with us from the beginning.

So, why the recall?

On the package of each drug, the dosage form (tablet, capsule, liquid, etc. ), drug specifications (active ingredient content) and usage (several times a day, how many times at a time) will be written down. There is something wrong with the specifications of the recalled drugs, and the effective components are more than the nominal ones 10%.

Ibuprofen is an anti-inflammatory drug with antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. And all this is based on anti-inflammation. When pathogenic factors such as bacteria invade the human body, the human body will have an inflammatory reaction and release inflammatory mediators. On the one hand, it will induce local vasodilation, causing local swelling, on the other hand, it can go up and send a signal to the temperature control center, which will cause the patient's body temperature to rise. Ibuprofen can inhibit inflammatory mediators, thus achieving antipyretic, analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

Inhibition pays attention to precision. Without precision, the expected effect will not be achieved, and more patients may unconsciously take too many drugs, resulting in unnecessary side effects. So the manufacturer took the initiative to recall.

Death caused by ibuprofen

On April 18, the French National Agency for Drug and Health Products Safety (ANSM) released a study that ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, would increase the risk of infection and even lead to death in severe cases.

More than one drug can inhibit the production of inflammatory mediators, thus relieving fever and pain. They are collectively referred to as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in clinic, including ibuprofen, aspirin and paracetamol. Every year, children get chicken pox, which can lead to headaches, fever and other symptoms. In the past, doctors would prescribe some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to make children feel better. However, recent research shows that bacteria may take advantage of this.

Why is this happening?

Because inflammatory mediators are not bad people. Think about it, what will we do if there is a fire in the community? First, we must call the police. Secondly, we'd better clear a passage for firemen to enter. For the human body, inflammatory mediators are not only warning signals, but also can dredge the expansion and permeability of blood vessels, so that immune cells can reach the designated parts quickly and destroy harmful substances. There are many kinds of immune cells. Neutrophils are the fastest responders to acute bacterial infections. Studies have shown that non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can inhibit neutrophil aggregation, so ibuprofen is not recommended for chickenpox patients at present.

Of course, this does not mean that all non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can no longer be used. In fact, after the study, ANSM gave his own suggestion that NSAIDs have strong or weak effects on neutrophils. For patients who are not suitable for ibuprofen, paracetamol can be used instead, and the disease can be controlled in the shortest time with the minimum effective dose to minimize adverse reactions.

Safety of ibuprofen

Having said that, is ibuprofen safe or not?

Many readers may feel scared as soon as they see the dense adverse reactions on the drug instructions. In fact, manufacturers only do their duty to inform patients of the risks of taking drugs as comprehensively as possible. It has been 58 years since ibuprofen was born. Large sales volume and wide use. To exaggerate, there are very few people on the whole earth who have never eaten. Large-scale studies have been conducted at home and abroad, and the results show that the probability of most adverse reactions is extremely low, and the most common are nausea and epigastric discomfort.

Don't worry too much unless you use it in large doses for a long time.

In a word, medication safety depends on medication safety. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are safe as a whole, and ibuprofen is a few adverse reactions. But be sure to remember: it is best to consult a doctor before symptomatic use; Don't increase the dosage or mix several non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs without permission, which may not get better soon, but the adverse reactions will increase greatly.
