Qu Tongzu's Qu Tongzu

(191July 12-200810/October 3), historian. People from Changsha, Hunan. The word "Tian Tian" was born in July 19 12, 1934 in Changsha, Hunan. Joined yenching university Research Institute, studied the social history of China under the guidance of Wu Wenzao and Yang Kaidao, and obtained a master's degree in 1936. From 65438 to 0939, he served as a lecturer in the Department of Social Politics and Economic Law of Yunnan University, and was later promoted to associate professor and professor. He died in Peking Union Medical College Hospital on June 3, 2008 at the age of 98. Qu Tongzu, a native of Changsha, Hunan Province, was born in July of 19 10. Grandfather Qu was an important minister in the late Qing Dynasty. At that time, he wrote a poem entitled "When Sun Sheng was born in June and Geng Xu": "A 60-year-old man has two temples, but he always sees Sun Zhi. There was a strong cry at the door, and Mu wanted to change the old one. If you like to hang an arc and the same thing, you may pass the inkstone and become timely. Laugh at the bed in the morning and evening, and wait until you see the white moustache. " His father Qu Xuanzhi worked in the embassies of Switzerland and the Netherlands, and his uncle Qu Xuanying was a famous scholar.

Many people talked about Qu Tongzu's family background, but Zhao Zengjiu, Qu Tongzu's wife, did not. Qu Zeqi, the son of Qu Tongzu, said: "My father is from Hunan and my mother is from Anhui. When they talk to each other, they never forget their hometown accent, one from Hunan and one from Anhui. " Zhao Zengjiu was born in a scholarly family known as the "four generations of Hanlin", ranking ninth. Zhao Puchu is Zhao Zengjiu's nephew. Although Zhao Puchu is older than Qu Tongzu, every time he comes, he always bows in front of the door and gives a gift to his grandnephew, which is very respectful.

1932, Qu Tongzu and Zhao Zengjiu, both studying in yenching university, got married. In fact, the Qu family and the Zhao family are family friends. They knew each other as early as Shanghai, and they were childhood friends. According to the regulations of yenching university, girls are not allowed to live in school dormitories after marriage. Qu Tongzu rented in Huaishu Street in Chengfu, accompanied by Weng Dujian and his wife. Coincidentally, Weng Dujian and his wife were also from yenching university, and the Qu family and Weng family became family friends, which was later passed down as a much-told story of Xuelin. According to Qu Zeqi, the two families have always kept in touch, and Weng Du Jian's eldest daughter and he are still college classmates.

During the Anti-Japanese War, Qu Tongzu refused to be conquered people, gave up his easy-to-find job and went south alone. At that time, Zhao Zengjiu stayed in Peiping with his eldest daughter. After the birth of his son Qu Zeqi, Qu Tongzu came back to visit, but he left Beiping soon. 1943, Zhao Zengjiu took a pair of children to Xi 'an by train, then took a big truck and rickshaw, and finally went to Chongqing to meet her husband. During this period, Qu Tongzu completed the main content of his masterpiece "China Law and China Society".

From 65438 to 0944, Qu Tongzu went to the United States to do research because of the active contact of his mentor Wu Wenzao. He took his wife and children across the hump to board a ship in India, and then arrived in San Francisco via the Philippines and Australia. Qu Zeqi recalled: "I didn't finish the battle at that time, but I was sitting on an armed transport ship with guns."

When I was in new york, I had contacts with Qu Tongzu, such as Yang Liansheng and He Bingdi who stayed in the United States, and Lao She and Luo Changpei who later returned to China. More people live on the first floor. At that time, Qu Tongzu lived in No.52, No.51,Zheng lived in No.42 and lived in the basement. Qu's family soon became a gathering place for many patriotic scholars. Qu Zeqi recalled: "Lao She's 50th birthday was in my home, and I remember there was a crosstalk show." Sometimes Yang Liansheng and He Bingdi will come and play baseball with Qu Zeqi in the nearby park. At that time, there was a China family who went to the United States together. A few years later, when their children communicate with Qu Zeqi, they can only speak English. Unlike most families in China, Qu Tongzu strongly disapproved of this phenomenon. He often teaches children not to forget Chinese. Qu Zeqi said: "After arriving in the United States, my father never spoke English at home unless there were foreign guests, fearing that my sister and I would forget Chinese. He often tells us stories about the Three Kingdoms, the Water Margin, the God List and so on, and he also brings books. " From this aspect, we can see why Qu Tongzu let his wife and children return to China when New China was just established.

Qu Zeqi said: "At that time, I hated the Kuomintang because it was so corrupt that everyone thought that the collapse of the Kuomintang was a good thing." So, Zhao Zengjiu took the children to the passenger ship "President Wilson" to go home. When passing through Japan, Wu Wenzao and his wife met him at the dock. Qu Tongzu didn't accompany him at that time because of contracts and debts. Who knows, it was 15.

After Zhao Zengjiu returned to China, he worked in the Economic Research Institute of China Academy of Sciences. Zhao Zengjiu was suspected of being a spy and was severely punished for leaving her husband and returning from the United States. Soon, Wu Wenzao was labeled as a "Rightist", and most of Qu Tongzu's other teachers and friends failed to escape this robbery. Qu Tongzu was caught off guard by the change of the situation and couldn't help being at a loss.

From 65438 to 0965, the domestic situation gradually improved, and Qu Tongzu decided to return to China. Weng Dujian had already contacted him and worked in the Institute of History of Chinese Academy of Sciences. Who knows, immediately met with the "Cultural Revolution", and history became the hardest hit. Seeing that his work went up in smoke, Qu Tongzu paid his own money to live in the Overseas Chinese Hostel. After living for several years, he couldn't arrange his work, so Qu Tongzu had to return to his hometown in Hunan.

197 1 year, qu tongzu was finally assigned to work in Hunan literature and history museum. At that time, he was placed in the museum of literature and history, and his main task was political study. Because some central leaders wanted to read Memoirs of Eden, Qu Tongzu finally found a meaningful job. What is more gratifying is that Zhao Zengjiu returned to Hunan this year after being assigned to Guizhou on 1959. Husband and wife reunited and translated the book together. 1976, Zhao Zengjiu died of illness, which brought a great blow to Qu Tongzu. At this time, the situation has quietly begun to change, and the "Cultural Revolution" has ended. The daughter took Qu Tongzu back to Beijing to take care of him.

From 65438 to 0978, Qu Tongzu was officially transferred to the Institute of Modern History of China Academy of Social Sciences. After the state implemented the policy, Qu Tongzu's situation improved. Qu Zeqi said: "It can be said that it is meticulous." At that time, Qu Tongzu was designated as a second-class researcher and his medical treatment was also very good. At first, it was equivalent to the bureau level, and later it was the deputy ministerial level. You know, Qu Tongzu is not even a section chief. Then, Qu Tongzu was awarded the first batch of doctoral supervisors, and Qu Zeqi was transferred from the northeast to Beijing to take care of his father.

According to the truth, Qu Tongzu should have made a batch of achievements after his life was stable. In fact, Qu Tongzu is also eager to write another book. Regrettably, this wish has never come true. Many people don't understand: Why didn't Qu Tongzu complete a monograph and bring a graduate student or academic assistant in the next 30 years?

In fact, the reason lies in Qu Tongzu's rigorous scholarship. Walking into the study and bedroom of Qu Tongzu in Chongwenmen East Street, you will be shocked by this simplicity and even have some doubts. Such an academic leader does not have the stacks he imagined. The key to writing a book is to rely on a large number of reference materials, and sometimes I don't know how many books to turn over to find some useful materials. Looking at Qu Tongzu's works, we will know that this writing method is much more tiring than most people think. At this time, although the living conditions of Qu Tongzu have improved, the reading and writing environment is not very good.

In order to write a book, Qu Tongzu goes to the library of Chinese Academy of Sciences near the Institute of Modern History by bus every day. It is inconvenient to use materials here. You can only borrow two books at a time, and it is also limited by the opening and closing time of the library. Don't say it's not as convenient as the libraries of Columbia University and Harvard University. In some respects, even the libraries of Yunnan University and The National SouthWest Associated University were inconvenient. Qu Zeqi said: "At that time, my father's office was in the low library of Columbia University. During the holiday, I helped organize books there to earn pocket money, and once met Eisenhower, then the principal. When I was at Harvard University, the library gave my father a key, and I was free to go in and out without restrictions. "

According to Qu Tongzu's rigorous writing habits, he obviously lacks energy when he is old. Over time, Qu Tongzu became more and more anxious. Once admitted to Union Medical College Hospital because of gastric ulcer, the famous doctor Zhang advised him to give up the idea of writing a book on the grounds of health. Due to many conditions, Qu Tongzu finally gave up writing books and enjoyed his old age.

Qu Tongzu didn't take the postgraduate exam at first because he was bent on writing a book. When he gave up writing books, he had no energy to guide graduate students. Qu Tongzu once said to his son, "When students read a book, they must read it themselves, otherwise they will not be qualified to guide." Qu Zeqi said: "My father has a good example, that is, Mr. Wu Wenzao. He is responsible to the students to the end, not only guiding them during their studies, but also after work. My father was helped by Mr. Wu to contact the United States for research. " In view of Qu Tongzu's habit of hands-on research, academic assistants cannot be brought. Qu Zeqi said: "My father didn't bring a graduate student, but unfortunately he didn't write a book to the Academy of Social Sciences." The apartment in Chongwenmen is the place where Qu Tongzu lived for the longest time in his life. To the north of the building is the ancient relic of the Ming City Wall in Beijing. Under the shade of green trees, sometimes groups of middle school students in red school uniforms run around, twittering and full of vitality. Qu Tongzu occasionally takes a walk, wondering if he will be shocked or think of the fiery youth of that year. After going in and out several times, Qu Tongzu's life has forged an indissoluble bond with Beijing.

However, there are not many such days, and Qu Tongzu rarely goes out in his later years. More often, he enjoys rare quiet and comfort in his study. A pot of asparagus in the sun adds a lot of bright colors to the whole study; And a calligraphy and painting on the wall and a Su embroidery on the table undoubtedly add a little elegance. But who knows how lonely Qu Tongzu was in his later years? His beloved wife Zhao Zengjiu has long since passed away, and so have his former mentor and friend. In addition to Rui Mu and He Bingdi, Wu Wenzao, Weng Dujian, Luo Changpei, Lao She and other teachers and friends have all left. In his later years, Qu Tongzu still maintained his interest in listening to western classical music, which he collected in his early years.

One morning, Qu Tongzu and Qu Zeqi talked about the style of study while drinking coffee. Qu Zeqi heard such a story when he was in America. At the opening ceremony of a hospital in the University of South Carolina, the dean gave a speech to the freshmen. One of the passages is a quotation from others, but there is no explanation. As a result, he was forced to resign, which shows the rigor of the style of study. Qu Tongzu agreed very much: "Yes, this is what you should do."

Qu Tongzu felt it. In the 1970s and 1980s, some scholars copied his works in order to evaluate the associate researcher. At that time, the relevant units found Qu Tongzu and said, "Qu Lao, what do you think? We must allow people to make mistakes and give people a way out. " Qu Tongzu has been worried about this, not because he copied his books, but because his style of study is too corrupt. Qu Zeqi said: "Plagiarism is called in English, just like legal fraud, which means there is no cure, which means there is no cure if you commit this."

On Qu Tongzu's desk, there are newspapers on the left and unopened letters on the right. The calendar is fixed on August 30, 2008. Qu Tongzu was taken to the hospital by ambulance for emergency treatment.

On June 3rd, 65438 10, Qu Tongzu stopped breathing. According to Qu Tongzu's wishes, the funeral should be simple. Coincidentally, however, the day of cremation was the Double Ninth Festival, and the next day's burial coincided with the Millennium. At the Eighth National Congress, Qu Tongzu and Zhao Zengjiu were buried together. Qu Zeqi made a cup of green tea in front of the tomb, put a pack of cigarettes and put two pots of flowers. That's Jiuhuashan tea that Qu Tongzu likes to drink and cigarettes that Zhao Zengjiu likes to smoke.
