Japanese dolls pray for health.
Every year, March 3rd is both Japan's Baby's Day and Girls' Day, and May 5th is both Dragon Boat Festival and Boys' Day. In these two days, anyone who has a girl or a boy at home can get a doll. Puppets can't be placed casually, and people usually have to tidy up their rooms in advance. On Girls' Day, if there is a girl under the age of 15 at home, in order to pray for her safety and health, parents should arrange puppets. A set of standard puppets, worth 500,000 yen, consists of 15 puppets and is placed on a staircase-style seven-story crimson wooden frame. Counting from the wooden frame, there are three ladies-in-waiting on the first floor, five dancers on the third floor, two guards with bows and arrows on the fourth floor, three attendants with sundries on the fifth floor, and luggage items are placed on the lower two floors. There are many girls at home, so every girl has to buy it. Families with poor economic conditions can buy muppets at a slightly cheaper price. Puppets must be put away the day after the festival, otherwise, people believe that it is difficult for girls at home to get married in the future. When the Boys' Day comes, the Japanese not only eat zongzi, race dragon boats, hang calamus and carp flags, but also worship May dolls at home. In May, dolls are warriors and generals in armor. There are Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, ancient historical figures in China, and Zhong Kui, a legendary ghost catcher. When placing the May Puppet, parents not only pray for the boy's health at home, but also hope that he will become a brave man. Except for girls' day and boys' day, Japanese generally don't put dolls at home. They think that no matter what kind of doll, once it leaves the hands of craftsmen, it has aura, lifelike shape, awe-inspiring, and dare not approach. Most importantly, the Japanese believe that most dolls are body double of family members, with evil spirits and aura. Therefore, dolls are different from ordinary toys. Even if they are worn out, people will never throw them away casually. If the puppet at home really can't be taken away, people must hold a ceremony to send it to a temple dedicated to abandoned dolls.
