Ahem! Is honey better than cough syrup?

In this crisp autumn season, we often hear many people coughing and expectoration, and hospitals and clinics are crowded with patients who come to see a cold and cough. Doctors always prescribe cough medicine for patients to take home for three meals. But now some studies show that drinking honey is better than using cough syrup, especially for children. The study was published in the journal Pediatrics.

Dr Herman Avner Cohen, from Petach Tikva Community Pediatric Clinic in Israel, said that the study was conducted between 1 and 65438+2 months in 2009, targeting children with upper respiratory tract infection and night cough, and 300 children 1~5 years old who were treated in six community pediatric clinics. Children with asthma, pneumonia, laryngotracheobronchitis, sinusitis or allergic rhinitis were excluded, and small patients who used cough or cold medicine and honey within 24 hours were also excluded from the study.

This is a randomized double-blind study. The children in the study were not given any honey products or placebos on the first night. The next night, 30 minutes before going to bed, one of the three brands of honey or a placebo (Lance jujube extract) was given randomly and double-blind. The evaluation indexes are the frequency of children's cough, the severity of cough and the influence of cough on children's and parents' sleep.

Dr Herman Avner Cohen explained that after comparing the symptom scores of each treatment group before and after the intervention, it was found that the three groups of patients who used honey had obvious improvement compared with the placebo group, but there was not much difference among the three brands of honey. For night cough, children's sleep and parents' sleep, eucalyptus, citrus and salvia miltiorrhiza are more effective than placebo in relieving cough.

Dr Herman Avner Cohen and his team said that according to their research results, honey can indeed be used as a cough replacement therapy for children over/kloc-0, and the effect is indeed more effective than cough syrup.
