Why do cows ruminate?

Rumination, simply put, means that cows will send the grass they have eaten back to their mouths and chew it slowly. Cows ruminate every day, just like cocks crow and hens lay eggs.

Rumination time of cattle

The rumination of cattle usually begins 30 ~ 60 minutes after stopping feeding, and the rumination of calves takes about 2 1 ~ 30 days. Rumination time of beef cattle is 7-8 hours per day at night, generally 70% in winter and 54% in summer, and ruminates 10 ~ 15 times per day. It takes 24-36 minutes for cattle to ruminate, and 40-60 minutes for beef cattle. 1 the grass balls of ordinary cattle are chewed 48 times in the mouth on average, and beef cattle chew 30 ~ 60 times. In winter, there are more coarse straw and yellow grass, and the chewing times increase accordingly.

Rumination time of cattle

Adult cattle ruminate 6 ~ 10 times a day, each time lasting 40 ~ 50 minutes, and the average rumination time is about 6 ~ 8 hours a day. Calves ruminate 2 1 day after birth, and young animals ruminate about 16 times a day. Rumination can expel the gas produced in the rumen during digestion.

Rumination can grind rumen contents and promote 60 ~ 70% cellulose fermentation and decomposition. The food swallowed by rumination stays in the reticulum for 25 ~ 30 seconds, and the food enters the abomasum and intestine 10 ~ 15 minutes after rumination. Liquid can enter the reticulum in 12 seconds and appear in the abomasum in 3 ~ 7 minutes. The acid gastric juice of abomasum can be secreted 5 ~ 6 minutes after eating.

The process of rumination in cattle

Cattle generally eat in a hurry, especially coarse grains, most of which are swallowed into the rumen without adequate chewing. Food is soaked and softened in rumen for a period of time, then retches and returns to the mouth, after chewing, it is mixed with saliva again and swallowed into rumen again. When cattle are sick, overtired and subjected to strong external stimuli, ruminant behavior will be weakened or completely stopped. Once rumination stops, food stays in the rumen, and the gas produced by fermentation cannot be discharged, which often causes rumen expansion.

If cows stop ruminating, it is not good news for farmers. A farmer was in such trouble.

His cow was bought for fattening, and since it entered the door, the whole family has regarded it as a treasure. In less than half a month, the cow suddenly stopped ruminating and eating grass, and became more and more listless. The farmers panicked and quickly moved reinforcements and invited local technicians. After the technician examined the cow, he quickly made a diagnosis that it might be acidosis. The technician immediately made a bottle for the cow and fed some bran water. Whether it can be saved or not will be observed for three days. A few hours later, the cow who finished the infusion bottle began to have spirit.

If this cow doesn't ruminate, its life will be in danger! The farmer doesn't understand, how can his cow get acidosis? The technician's answer surprised him, saying it was because he didn't feed the cows correctly.

Now farmers may be a little confused. He takes care of this precious cow very carefully, even more carefully than taking care of his own children. Especially when eating, he not only feeds forage and concentrate in turn, but also rolls the grass much thinner than usual. Feeding the cow is not so careful, but feeding it wrong?
