This is the fourth stage of sleep.

The δ rhythm will disappear and be replaced by the activity pattern of brain waves. Your eyes will start to move quickly under the closed eyelids, as if you were watching what was happening in front of you. This period of rapid eye movement lasts about 8 to 15 minutes, which is called rapid eye movement sleep. During REM sleep, your body will soon relax again, your breathing will become slow and regular again, and you will slowly slide back from 1 stage to stage 4 sleep-close to consciousness again after about 80 minutes.

But you haven't been in this state of sleep all night. About 80 minutes after falling asleep, the level of brain movement will increase slightly again. The δ rhythm disappears and is replaced by the movement pattern of brain waves. Your eyes will move quickly under the closed eyelids, as if you were watching what was happening in front of you. This rapid eye movement period lasts about 8- 15 minutes, and this stage of sleep is called rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. During REM sleep, your limbs will soon relax again, your breathing will slow down again and become rhythmic, and you will easily slide from the first stage of sleep to the fourth stage-until you are close to waking up again after about 80 minutes.
