Huaian is located in the north-central part of Jiangsu Province, east of Jianghuai Plain. Located in the Yangtze River Delta, it is an important central city in northern Jiangsu, a closely-circled city in Nanjing metropolitan area, and the first city in the Huaihe River eco-economic belt, located at the intersection of the ancient Huaihe River and the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal.
Hongze Lake, the fourth largest freshwater lake in China, is located on the Qinling-Huaihe line, which is the north-south boundary of China. It is a national civilized city, a national historical and cultural city, a national sanitary city, a national garden city and a national environmental protection model city.

Huaian city, rivers and lakes, water network. Nine rivers, including Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, Huaishuxin River, Subei Irrigation Canal, Huaihe River Estuary, Abandoned Yellow River, Liutang River, Yanhe River and Huaihe River Main Stream, run through the territory.
Most of Hongze Lake, one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China, is located in the city, and other small and medium-sized lakes such as Baima Lake, gaoyou lake and baoying lake are embedded in it. The plain area accounts for 69.39% of the total area, the lake area accounts for 1 1.39%, and the hilly area accounts for 18.32%. It is a typical "plain water town".
