In recent years, the rapid rise of a new generation of information technology such as 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, big data, coupled with the continuous release of wearable devices, vehicle display, AI and other emerging needs, so that the display has become an important port of human-computer interaction, which has brought a broader space for the development of new display technology innovation. At the 2019 Cross-Strait (Chengdu) New Display Industry Development Summit Forum held on May 29, the speeches made by two academicians, Ouyang Zhongchan and Zheng Youwei, on ultra-high-definition video and the development of the Micro LED industry have undoubtedly become the biggest highlights of the forum.
Ultra HD video industry should fly in the wind through the Winter Olympics
The Action Plan for the Development of Ultra HD Video Industry (2009-2022), which was introduced in March 2019, explicitly proposed that the overall scale of China's Ultra HD video industry should reach 4 trillion yuan by 2022, and that the overall scale of China's Ultra HD video industry should reach 4 trillion yuan by 2020. In 2020, CCTV and local TV stations with conditions should operate 4K channels, and cable TV networks and IPTV platforms in no less than five provinces and cities should carry out 4K live channel transmission and on-demand services, and realize the production capacity of ultra-high-definition programs of more than 10,000 hours/year; by 2022, the supply capacity of 4K channels should be greatly improved, the annual production capacity of ultra-high-definition video programs should be up to 30,000 hours, and the number of ultra-high-definition video users to reach 200 million.
Ouyang Zhongchan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that ultra-high-definition technology is not only used in the television industry, but also will lead to the development of VR/AR, medical display, digital signage, security monitoring, automotive networking, military maps and other industries, it is expected that in 2020, the output value of the 4K/8K ultra-high-definition image will reach 2.5 trillion yuan, of which 8K ultra-high-definition image industry will exceed 1 trillion yuan.
According to IHS Markit forecast, in 2025, the market demand for ultra-high-definition video display screens will reach 183M ㎡, with a penetration rate of 67%, and an output value of about $70 billion.
Ouyang Zhongchan believes that China's advantage in the 4K/8K ultra-high-definition video industry is concentrated in the playback display, transmission links. In the playback display link, the Chinese mainland 8K UHD display terminal has absolute advantage, Skyworth, Hisense, Changhong, Konka and other brands have launched 8K UHD TV, semiconductor display leading enterprises BOE in the field of 8K UHD display panels leading the world, South Korea's Samsung, LG in the U.S. Consumer Electronics Show exhibition and award-winning 8K series of products, its display panels are from the BOE.8K Japan, a global leader in the UHD industry, began to cooperate with BOE four years ago, and Japan's display terminals for trial broadcasts at the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil used BOE's independently innovative 8K displays instead of products from Sharp, a local Japanese company.
Ouyang Zhongchan calculated an account, and came to the conclusion that the seemingly "excess" TFT-LCD production capacity in the 4K/8K TV demand is far from enough. He said, at present, China's 2K TV holdings 700 million units, more than 10 generation capacity, each piece of 6 cut 65 inches, 5 (BOE 2, Guangzhou Foxconn 1, Huaxing Optoelectronics 2) each year can only provide 40 million units of 4K/8K TV, all replacements need nearly 20 years. But 2K to 4K/8K transition is not "instantaneous", quite a long time, 2K, 4K, 8K will co-exist.
He also pointed out that Japan's roadmap for the development of 4K/8K, in response to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Japan's NHK TV has opened 4K/8K TV broadcasts. As a latecomer, China's image 4K/8K ultra-high-definition video industry, in order to meet the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television as soon as possible to deploy the opening of the 4K/8K television broadcasting, drive the development of ultra-high-definition video industry. To this end, he suggested, firstly, to formulate a development strategy for the 4K/8K ultra-high-definition video industry, to promote the supply-side reform of the video industry, to guide the collaborative innovation of China's backbone enterprises and research institutions in the ultra-high-definition video industry, and to realize the industrialization of 4K/8K ultra-high-definition as early as possible.
Secondly, the National Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and other ministries and commissions, in formulating the 2019-2021 Action Plan for the Development of China's New Display Industry, should introduce policies such as the "subsidy for the purchase of 4K/8K TVs" to support China's consumers in replacing 2K TVs and upgrading to 4K/8K TVs.
Finally, the key links in the industrial chain of enterprises and backbone R & D institutions as the core, the formation of national "government, industry, academia, research and use" of the "China 4K/8K ultra-high-definition image industry alliance", to study the development trend of the industry and the development of the industry strategy and policy, to help the government authorities to do a good job in the industry.

Grasp the opportunity of Micro LED development to grasp the initiative of development
And in the just-concluded SID Display Week 2019 (International Display Week), the concentrated display of Micro LED products confirms the viewpoints of Jung Youwei. PCB board for Micro LED from Taiwan ITRI, 7.56 inch full color Micro LED display (resolution up to 720*480, pixel density 114PPI, penetration rate 60%), flexible Micro LED display and wearable device up to 458PDPI from Taiwan neptunium technology, 7.56 inch transparent full color display from Pegasus Microelectronics. Huaxing Optoelectronics' 3.5-inch full-color Micro LED display, Plessey's Micro LED display for AR applications, and X-Display's 5.1-inch 70PPI display panel using an active driver Micro IC solution ...... The different shapes of the products make the Micro LEDs shine.
Zheng Youwei believes that based on the scalability of Micro LED display, the seamless splicing of Micro LED module can realize the super large screen terminal display of any size and shape, and Micro LED is more advantageous compared with LCD and OLED to support the next generation of digital cinema displays on the demand for high dynamic range, ultra-high pixel density, high brightness and high contrast ratio. It is expected to take the lead in launching high-end engineering display products used in digital movie screens with ultra-large size. It has a large number of applications in digital cinema, command and control center, business center display, high-end business meetings, high-end digital notices, photoelectric production-level products. In recent years, Sony, Samsung, LGD launched a variety of Micro LED splicing module splicing into the oversized digital movie screen prototype.
Zheng Youwei emphasized that "Mega Transfer" is the most important bottleneck technology to develop Micro LED, and now there are many equipment manufacturing companies which provide various kinds of Mega Transfer process, such as "Laser Placement Technology" developed by Uniqarca. ", a laser can transfer 100 million cores per hour; Japanese equipment factory Toray in this year's NEPCON JAPAN to show a complete set of giant transfer process technology and equipment. "At present, Micro LED technology is progressing very fast, eight immortals are crossing the sea, and each of them shows their own skills, it is not clear which technology will win, but this does not affect the further development of Micro LED products." Zheng Youwei said.
Zheng Youwei also believes that Mini LED, as a transition technology to develop Micro LED, shows a broad application prospect. He said that Mini LED supports the development of small pitch LED in the direction of reducing the pitch, the development of small pitch LED technology is facing technical bottlenecks such as poor consistency, low yield, high cost, poor reliability, difficult maintenance, etc. Mini LED is an integrated package from discrete packaging, which can overcome these technical difficulties and promote the development of smaller pitch products, and open up a broader market space for small pitch LED technology. Mini LED is expected to support the development of LED display industry as a new technology belt after small pitch LED.
Finally, Mr. Zheng concluded that Micro LED is a strategic new technology, which conforms to the development needs of the information age, and supports the sustainable development of new generation of information technology LED display technology. Micro LED promotes the big change of LED display technology, and the synergistic development of Small Pitch LED, Mini LED and Micro LED will lead the LED display technology to move from the outdoor high-end application to the mainstream civil market, which will be the best way for the LED display technology to develop. Toward the mainstream civil market, for the LED display industry to expand huge business opportunities. "We have to grasp the opportunity of Micro LED development, learn from the development experience of display industry, respond positively, seize the technology opportunity and master the initiative of development." Zheng Youwei said.
