VR is also being used in the medical field to rehab stroke victims and brain-injured patients, helping them rebuild motor and cognitive function through immersive training programs that cost far less than physical therapy. There is also evidence that VR is promising for psychiatric rehabilitation, with adjunctive roles in the treatment of chronic stress, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders and phobias. According to a 2014 study in the American Journal of Psychology, VR exposure therapy was shown to be effective in relieving symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
