What types of battery internal resistance testers are available and what is the difference between them?

Battery systems, such as those used in Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), are an important part of critical application scenarios that minimize the risk of failure and ensure the smooth operation of power supplies in, for example, healthcare facilities and data centers.

The METRACELL BT Pro

is a versatile, portable, and multi-functional test instrument for evaluating and maintaining battery systems and uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) that are primarily based on lead-acid storage batteries. Lead-acid batteries account for more than 75% of all rechargeable energy storage devices in use today, and because high-capacity storage is necessary in some cases, it is common to connect multiple single-cell modules in series with each other. However, since the individual cell modules are connected in series,

defective modules with high internal resistance can increase the charging voltage to neighboring modules, thereby shortening the life of the entire battery string.

METRACELL

The BT Pro is capable of recording voltages (up to 24 V DC for single cell module voltages) as well as

electrical and electrochemical resistances of single cell modules as reference measurements during initial commissioning and periodic testing. In addition, total voltages of up to ?600 V DC

can be measured and interval recordings [of voltage and current measurements] can be made - for example during discharge. The instrument can store up to 300,000

data records, which can be managed via the included battery management software and exported in report form.

Battery temperature and acid density can also be measured with optional sensor accessories.
