[edit]Phoenix TV host Lu Yu's conversation with Zhang Haidi
--True and beautiful Zhang Haidi (excerpts) More than 20 years have passed, and Zhang Haidi, who will be 47 years old this year, seems to be fading away from the aura of people's minds. Experienced the torture of cancer, love marriage controversy, the challenge of death, ...... still frankly face Lu Yu. She will say something ......
Zhang Haidi: the earliest we know my name when I was 26 years old, this year is going to be 47 years old, more than 20 years past, time is really fast, but at that time, those I sometimes think back, I feel like a dream, and think about it or think of it like what happened to others! I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to do that.
Lu Yu: Do you still remember the time when you were the most mythologized, what kind of situation you were living in every day?
Zhang Haidi: Every day life is not peaceful, I received a letter every day, are packed in sacks, sacks of sacks sent to my unit, sent to my home, that time there is no way, and in my home, it is a batch of batches of people, some of them more than a hundred, as few as dozens of people, or a few people, every day to go, we must meet Haidi, I look at her okay?
Lu Yu: But from an outsider's point of view, for example, from my point of view, one day, Zhang Haidi seems to have disappeared from my line of sight, and then seldom heard from her. I feel that slowly, you do not know your own initiative to fade out of our sight, or the outside world is slowly away from you. In the end is a two-way choice, or purely your personal choice?
Zhang Haidi: Probably, I think it's a two-way street, because first of all, I think it's my personal. I personally I think I should keep a clear head, especially I chose this career, as a writer, is supposed to work behind the scenes, not in the foreground. Because I'm not an actor, I'm not going to act, I don't need to be on stage, because my work should be invisible to everyone, it's my own choice. When people can't see me, it could be the very moment when I'm trudging through the long river of my career. Then in this publicity media, they publicize a character, for me, it should be more long-lasting. There's been and still is often any kind of page-by-page writing about Heidi or whatever. But then, by 1986, this would have gotten a little better.
(Interpretation) In 1991, Zhang Haidi received a doctor's diagnosis and learned that her nose was suffering from melanoma. So she went through the 6th major surgery of her life.
Lu Yu: That surgery was painful, right?
Zhang Haidi: very painful, it should be said that the time from stripping to sewing, because so little place, the best doctors in Shanghai for my treatment, has been the greatest effort, and so little place stitched more than forty stitches. The stitches were very small, and although the thread was very thin, it was like pulling a piece of twine for me. But as a woman, I felt that I had suffered the kind of pain that even a man could not bear. The pain was not only physical, but most importantly, mental. My hands were cold and trembling after the operation, but I didn't cry out. When I came out, my lover was waiting for me outside, and when I touched his hand, it was even colder than mine. Later I told him, I said I had a feeling that if I had been captured by the enemy during the White Terror, I wouldn't have said anything, I said would you say anything, he said I wouldn't say anything either. I said no, you would say it. I couldn't smile at that time because my face hurt too much to smile, but I knew myself that I could endure the most unbearable pain in the world.
Lu Yu: you did not shed a single tear at that time?
Zhang Haidi: No, I never shed a tear because of my illness. I'm a very emotional person, but never because of the disease shed tears. It's always because of parting, leaving their loved ones, leaving their friends, and then blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Can everyone wait a moment, I am looking at the table to go to the bathroom.
Lu Yu: I found that there is a point in Haidi that is beyond the norm, and that is the sensitivity to time. Since she is completely unconscious from the chest down, her body must be very strict about time. Every two hours, she must use the restroom once, and every time she does not need to be reminded by others, also do not need to go on the alarm clock, as if the body already has a natural biological clock, to the time will remind her. Heidi told me that this is a habit she has developed over the past 40 years.
(Interpretation) After the operation, Zhang Haidi's physical condition was extremely poor, but she still insisted on enrolling in the Department of Philosophy at Jilin University and pursuing postgraduate studies. Two years later, she received her degree and became China's first wheelchair-bound Master of Philosophy.
Lu Yu: 42 years with the disease has been such a companion, I do not know what kind of feeling, a kind of state?
Zhang Haidi: There are times when I think about it myself, and occasionally I have tears in my eyes, and I am touched by myself. Because what is it, sometimes, so think, oops, especially sometimes I talk to my mom. Sometimes I say, "Mom, if I had been sick at that time, I could have lasted ten years, twenty years, I could have lasted thirty years, I could have lasted thirty years. Really, if I could have lasted forty years, I think it would have been very, very difficult because I would have had to overcome a lot of things that other people couldn't even see. Then it's about having to overcome a lot of confusion and obstacles that other people can't even imagine.
Lu Yu: But why didn't you give up?
Zhang Haidi: did not give up is, every day want to think about giving up, but every day and pick it up. I think again the flame of life, that is, the flame that is already about to be extinguished, carefully, as I told them a few days ago, I said that I myself want to give up every day, and again like a small flame to pick it up. This little flame I blow on, and I let it become the bonfire of my mind again, and the more I blow on it, the more I blow on it, the more I let it continue to burn.
Lu Yu: has been, Zhang Haidi is regarded as a heroic figure, and in our minds always feel that heroes and ordinary people are not the same, do not eat earthly fire, no desire. But Zhang Haidi, like every ordinary woman, has been full of fantasies and pursuits of love since she was a child. Of course she has tasted the happiness of love and suffered the blow of lost love. But she said even if her wings are broken, her heart will still fly.
(Interpretation) In 1970, Zhang Haidi followed her parents and came to the rural area of Xin County, Liaocheng, Shandong Province. There, as a teenager, Zhang Haidi had her first love.
Zhang Haidi: one day I like a boy, the boy very very like me, is in our little county. But it is after so many years, probably, this is what I did not expect, one day is that he suddenly brought a girl to my house, all the way to the present I remember that girl. It was winter, and she was wearing something that was rare at that time, because she had come from out of town, and she was wearing a woolen coat that was rare, with a woolen collar, and it was like this I think it was just like the kind that Tonya wore, that kind of dress, because it was very cold at that time in our part of the world. And he came in and he said, ah, Heidi, this is my cousin. We were still going to the movies together that day, and they pushed me to go to the movies, and he told me this is his cousin. But at that time I was very sensitive to just look at this girl, she was really very beautiful and so healthy too. It was from this day on that I had the feeling that the boy I liked, he really alienated me. At this time I felt what? I felt that really that place was too small, that my disability was too heavy. I can understand that when he is making a decision between real and imagined love, he must favor some aspects of society and the world. I'm willing to chew away the pain myself, and I'm sure by this time next year I won't be in pain, and that's exactly what happened. It was very painful to go through. Then so much so that I still do everything like I used to. There were times when my friend pushed me to go to the movies, to an open-air theater. While watching the movie, this friend of mine went and I really wanted to see him, I wanted to look at him again. But not necessarily face-to-face, face-to-face is impossible, he dare not to my eyes, I prefer not to see his eyes, I would like to be far away from the silent look. Then it is my friend pushed me, is walking through a hutong, just when he was in the hutong tight end, I so look, he and the girl, that is, his cousin walking together, I heart then really like, you know, what do you mean pinzha.
Lu Yu: I understand that feeling.
Zhang Haidi: I really know what it feels like to be stabbed by a needle, and each of us women, I think, should experience that kind of pain, love is really, is like Shakespeare said, love is to let people taste all the world's flavors, and if it really is the sweetness of the beginning, not to experience this kind of pain, then a woman she is not complete. LU Yu: And then, besides the emotional pain, have you tasted other flavors? Sour and sweet and bitter and spicy you should have tasted, including sweet.
Zhang Haidi: Sweet is indeed there, there is also that I experienced. Like I have a male friend, when he went to visit me at that time, he left me a sentence, let me just think about it, is to think about it for several years, he said, Haidi, he said, when I come back the next time, you must feel really you gained happiness, just such a sentence, at that time, we are very obscure. Then a few years later, he was in a very far away place, also intellectual youth, in the Yellow River Military Horse Farm, in that place, this thing I very seldom told others. After some years, one day he sent me a letter, this letter of deposit inside a photo, this photo after reading, I then tore.
Lu Yu: Why?
Zhang Haidi: Because (in the photo) he was standing with a woman on a step, a step of a building, and he stood a little higher, and the woman stood a little lower. What he wrote on the back was that he said, "Haidi, I'm married, and my lover is doing something something. And he very, very plainly just said something like that and sent me a picture like that, and I think he probably expected my blessing. And he was like a bullet to me, all of a sudden, not to say a bullet, it was like a sword stabbed me all of a sudden, it was that kind of pain that just even made my whole body jerk all of a sudden, and made me come back to the reality all of a sudden from that dream, and for a moment I would feel that the reality was very cold, it was so cold. I pursued it again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again, I lost it.
(Interpretation) Zhang Haidi's husband was Wang Zuoliang, who taught foreign languages at Shandong Normal University. The union of the two was in 1982. They did not hold a wedding, and everything was spent in peace, as it is now.
Lu Yu: I remember in the early 1990s, the newspapers had a debate, Zhang Haidi in the end should be married, for these arguments Zhang Haidi himself is a laugh to the, she said as early as 1982, before she became a household name, has been married, after nearly 20 years of married life, we look at it from the point of view of the outsiders, if it is not that wheelchair, the couple and the millions of ordinary couples in China are not too big. China's millions of ordinary couples are not much different.
Lu Yu: Before seeing Zhang Haidi, I have been a little worried, I'm afraid that she is not willing to talk about their own emotional experience and family life, but Haidi is very frank, in the time of this visit, Haidi's Mr. and sister are in the house, Haidi is also completely unapologetic about us, and from time to time to direct their husbands to help their own cushion, or pour a cup of coffee, I can feel Haidi is the center of the family, not because of the whole of the family, but also because of the whole of the world. I can feel that Haidi is the center of the family, not because the whole family due to her condition, and have to surround her, but Haidi has such a kind of power, the surrounding people together.
(Interpretation) Mr. and Mrs. Zhang Haidi do not have children. 10 years ago, they adopted this puppy, named "Bench". The couple loved it so much that they felt it was their child.
Lu Yu: About Zhang Haidi, I have heard such two voices, some people say, like her such a smart and talented woman, but have to bear so much physical pain, God is too unfair. But others say that Zhang Haidi has everything, fame, status, and has published so many books, what more could she ask for. But Haidi told me that she was willing to give up all these things and only wished to have a healthy and normal body. I think this is hard for ordinary people to understand. When Heidi was together we talked about death, and I asked her if she were to write her own epitaph, what would she write? Heidi said she would write this, Here lies an indomitable Heidi, a beautiful Heidi.

Zhang Haidi was born in Jinan in the fall of 1955, and was paralyzed from the chest down at the age of five due to spinal cord disease. From then on, Zhang Haidi began her unique life. She was unable to go to school, so she finished her secondary school course at home, and at the age of 15, Haidi followed her parents and was sent down to the rural area of Liaocheng, Shandong Province, to teach her children as a pedagogue. She also taught herself the art of acupuncture and moxibustion and treated her townspeople for free. Later, Zhang Haidi self-taught a number of foreign languages, but also as a radio repairman.
In front of the cruel challenge of fate, Zhang Haidi did not frustrated and sink, she with tenacity and perseverance to fight with the disease, withstood the severe test, full of confidence in life. Although she did not have the opportunity to enter the school gate, she was furious to study, finished all the courses of primary and secondary schools, studied English, Japanese, German and Esperanto in the university, and pursued university and master's degree courses. 1983 Zhang Haidi began to engage in literary creation, and successively translated hundreds of thousands of English novels such as The Seaside Clinic, and compiled books such as Open Window to the Sky, The Pursuit of Life, and Dreams from a Wheelchair. Dreams from a Wheelchair. Among them, Dreams on a Wheelchair was published in Japan and South Korea, while Questions of Life was reprinted three times in less than half a year after its publication, and won the National "Five One Project" Book Award. Prior to "The Pursuit of Life," this award had never been given to a prose work. Recently, a 300,000-word long novel, "The Top", is about to be released. Since 1983, Zhang Haidi has written and translated more than a million words.
In order to make a greater contribution to society, she has studied more than a dozen medical monographs on her own, and at the same time sought advice from experienced doctors, learned acupuncture and other medical skills, and treated the masses for more than 10,000 times without compensation.
In 1983, China Youth Daily published "is a shooting star, we must leave the light on earth," Zhang Haidi fame, China, to obtain two reputation, one is the "eighties new Lei Feng", a "contemporary Paul".
Zhang Haidi, with the conviction that "to be alive is to be a good person for the society", took Paul as an example, and was brave enough to dedicate her light and heat to the people. She to their own words and deeds, answering the hundreds of millions of young people are very concerned about the outlook on life, the value of the problem. Deng Xiaoping's handwriting inscription: "Study Zhang Haidi, to be ideal, moral, cultured, disciplined ****productivist newcomers!"
Subsequently, making Zhang Haidi a moral force.
Zhang Haidi is now a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), working for the Shandong Writers' Association, engaging in creation and translation.
(2) Live to be a person beneficial to society
Zhang Haidi said, "I am like a shooting star, to leave the light on earth." With such an ideal, she studied and worked with extraordinary perseverance, singing a hymn of life.
"To live, we must work for the people." Zhang Haidi said and did so. 1970, when she was 15 years old, she followed her parents to live in the countryside. In the countryside, she thought of others in every way and did things for the people. When she realized that there was no music teacher in the elementary school, she took the initiative to teach singing at the school. After school, she also helped students organize self-study groups, cut their hair, pinned buttons and mended their clothes. When she realized that there was a lack of medicine in the village, she resolved to learn general medical knowledge and techniques, and used her pocket money to buy medical books, thermometers, stethoscopes and common medicines. She finished reading medical books such as Acupuncture and Moxibustion, Human Anatomy, Internal Medicine, and Practical Pediatrics. When learning acupuncture, she practiced sticking needles on herself repeatedly in order to experience the feeling of needles. In just a few years, she actually became a local young "famous doctor". As long as someone seeks medical treatment, she will warmly receive. Whenever someone seeks treatment, she will warmly receive them. When a seriously ill person is unable to move, she will sit in a wheelchair and go to the patient's door to give them needles and medicines. There is an old man surnamed Geng, because of the sequelae of cerebral thrombosis, 6 years can not speak, and paralyzed for 3 years, has not been cured. Zhang Haidi encouraged Mr. Geng to strengthen his confidence in overcoming the disease, while reading a large number of books and carefully treating Mr. Geng. Later, Mr. Geng was finally able to speak and walk. This is the first time I've ever seen a man with a high level of skill, and I've never seen a man with a high level of skill.
Comrade Zhang Haidi took the society and the people as her greatest happiness. Her noble spirit, shining with the light of ****productivism.
Some people say, life in the world, eat well, wear well, play well is the most happy. I think life in the world, only hard work, angry, with their own hands to create wealth, for the liberation of mankind's cause - ****productivism to contribute their own everything, this is the most happy.

[Edit Paragraph]About Happiness
Happiness is very difficult, we often for a short period of time to be happy, sadness for years, Zhang Haidi more difficult. Zhang Haidi looks happy, even in the most painful time, she can make a big smile. But Zhang Haidi said she never had a thing that made her really happy.
Zhang Haidi is now a writer, but writing is painful. She got massive bedsores and her bones were exposed, but she was still writing. She had several more surgeries, which were painful. Her nose cancer was operated on without anesthesia, and she clearly felt the knife opening up her nasal cavity and the needle passing through her skin. The first time she heard she had cancer, she even felt elated - finally she could be relieved. Zhang Haidi said: My greatest joy is death. But she survived.
She writes novels, paints oil paintings, dances ballet, shoots TV, sings, reads a master's degree ...... and even, she loves perfume, she lives. Host Zhu Jun asked her, you sit like this is not very difficult, she said, yes, very difficult, but I have been sitting like this for 40 years. As a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), her proposal is to implement barrier-free facilities in colleges and universities." I'm in pain, but I can make others happy just the same", said Zhang Haidi, as poetry permeated from her side.
"20 years have passed, now looking back, facing the media I have always been very calm, when you suddenly face so many flashing lights, laughter, applause, adjusting yourself is the most important thing, what should be done is still what I do, my heart is always like a vast expanse of blue water, so blue, so deep."
"There is also a vulnerable Heidi. The chagrin of a disabled woman like me who gets dirty and can't do anything about it is something you can't even imagine. Sometimes I even think how nice it would be to not have me. Sometimes when I travel and live in a high building, I go there and look down, and I often think that if I did fall like that, it would be the end of everything, I would never have to suffer anything again, and I even look forward to being able to euthanize myself."
"In retrospect, I am indeed a very tenacious Heidi, disability is a big pain for human beings, but there is always a need for someone to chew on it, I am grateful that life has given me a pen that can talk, it allows me to confide in, to fight, I not only live, but also in the writing of the release of the mind."
"Sitting in front of this window today, looking at this large green meadow in front of me, I hope to be able to feel the warmth of the earth with my feet, step by step, as you do, and to find the feeling of walking that I used to have before ......"
When she was 5 years old, Zhang Haidi suffered from spinal cord hemangioma resulting in high paraplegia, but she was disabled and determined.
At the age of five, Zhang Haidi was paralyzed due to a spinal cord aneurysm, but she has a strong will to be disabled, study hard, and is eager to help others, and is known as the "contemporary Paul".
In front of the cruel challenge of fate, Zhang Haidi did not frustrated and sink, she with tenacity and perseverance to fight with the disease, withstood the severe test, full of confidence in life. Although she did not have the opportunity to enter the school door, but study diligently, finished elementary school, secondary school courses, self-taught college English, Japanese, German and Esperanto, and studied college and master's degree courses. 1983 March 7, **** Youth League Central Committee held a naming and recognition meeting in Beijing, awarded the "80's new Thunderbolt" known as Comrade Zhang Haidi "excellent **** Youth League members" title. In 1983, Zhang Haidi began to engage in literary creation, successively translated "Seaside Clinic", "Little Miller's Travels" and "Rebecca in the New School", and created "Open Window to the Sky", "The Pursuit of Life", "Dreams on a Wheelchair", and other works of more than one million words. She is now a first-class writer in the Literary Creation Office of Shandong Writers' Association, and was awarded a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Jilin University in 1993, and participated in the Far South Games in 1994. 1997, she was selected as one of Japan's NHK's "Five Outstanding People with Disabilities in the World", and has served as the Chairman of the China Association of the Physically Handicapped since 1998, and was honored with the title of National Model Worker in 2000.
Twenty years have passed since we met Zhang Haidi. Few people under the age of 20 now remember Zhang Haidi. Modern medicine continued Zhang Haidi's life, but, by one operation to continue the life, how much luster will there be?20 years ago, Zhang Haidi strangled the throat of destiny, or the blood of young people, 20 years past, is she still knocking on the door of destiny? Let's take a look at Zhang Haidi's inner world.
