United Express? carry-on baggage guide
Each passenger is allowed to bring one carry-on bag and one personal item on board for free. To ensure a smooth boarding, it is very important that these items fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.
Carry-on baggage
The maximum size of carry-on baggage shall not exceed 14 inches by 9 inches by 22 inches (35 cm by 22 cm by 56 cm), including handles and wheels.
Personal items
Personal items (such as shoulder bags, backpacks, laptop bags, or other small items) must not exceed the maximum size of 9 inches x 10 inches x 17 inches (22 cm x 25 cm x 43 cm).
The following items are allowed on board and do not count towards your one carry-on baggage and one personal item allowance:
Coats or umbrellas
Reading materials
Pet bag (service fee applies)
FAA approved child restraint
Diaper bag
Airport purchased food or Products
Assistive devices (foldable wheelchairs, canes, a pair of crutches, any medical equipment that requires medication, portable oxygen concentrators, etc.)
Musical instruments to carry with you
As part of one personal item and one piece of carry-on baggage that can be carried on board, passengers can carry violins, guitars or other small musical instruments on board, but they need to meet the following requirements:
Musical instruments may be placed in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of the passenger; and
there will still be room for the instrument when the passenger boards the aircraft
On United Airlines and United Express (United Express) Musical instruments transported on board must be placed in a hard-shell case.
Liquids, Gels, and Aerosols
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) allows liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers less than 3.4 ounces (100 ml) per passenger. Gels and aerosols must be packaged in a quart (one liter) clear, resealable bag.
Effective January 31, 2014, international passengers flying to or transiting through the United States are allowed to carry duty-free liquids in excess of 3.4 ounces (100 ml) in carry-on baggage. This rule only applies to products purchased at duty-free stores, placed in a complete, dedicated security tamper-evident clear bag, scanned and deemed safe by TSA staff. Scanning does not apply to opaque, ceramic, metal bottles or other containers. Liquids that cannot be scanned and confirmed to be safe are not allowed in carry-on baggage. Passengers can choose to check in such items or discard them.
Carry-on baggage on United Express flights
United Express flights are operated by regional partner airlines and the aircraft types used smaller than aircraft on United's main routes. Generally speaking, on United Express fleet aircraft, the overhead bin space for carry-on luggage is smaller; in most cases, trolley cases and other large carry-on luggage cannot be accommodated on United Express flights in the overhead bin. Therefore, passengers may need to check in trolley cases and other large carry-on luggage at the boarding gate before boarding the plane.
The gate staff will provide green tags for these items, and when boarding the aircraft, the baggage handler will deliver these items to the aircraft and place them in the luggage compartment. Upon arrival, passengers can retrieve their green-tagged bags on the plane rather than at baggage claim. Passengers flying on EMB170, EMB175 or CRJ-700 aircraft can carry a trolley suitcase or large carry-on luggage in the cabin because of the wider overhead bin space.
When traveling on United Express, be sure to pack any medications or other items you may need on board in a small carry-on bag so you can carry them with you throughout the flight . Personal vaporizers and e-cigarettes should be packed in your small carry-on bag as we do not allow these items in checked or gate checked baggage.
When flying on United’s main routes, any item larger than the permitted carry-on size or exceeding the one carry-on bag and personal item allowance will be white-tagged and Have it shipped to your final destination. If baggage is checked and tagged at the ticket check-in counter, baggage service charges may apply. White tagged bags must be retrieved at baggage claim.
