Fuzhou Medical College, formerly known as Gandong University, was founded in 1958 as Gandong University (Medical Department).

Gandong University (Medical Department) was converted into Fuzhou Regional Health School.

Jiangxi Medical College (Fuzhou Branch) was founded in 1978.

Nanchang University Fuzhou Medical College in 1978 Fuzhou Health School merged into Jiangxi Medical College (Fuzhou Branch).

2000 Fuzhou branch hospital into the former Jiangxi Medical College.

In 2005 along with the medical school merged with Nanchang University and became one of the five campuses of Nanchang University, which mainly undertakes the task of medical education.

In 2014, the college was officially renamed Fuzhou Medical College of Nanchang University.

The college is an integral part of medical education of Nanchang University, and is a teaching college that cultivates specialized and practical talents in medicine. There are two levels of education system: undergraduate (second batch) and specialized.

The undergraduate programs include six specialties, including clinical medicine, nursing, stomatology, medical testing technology and pharmacy.

Specialties include 9 specialties and directions such as Clinical Medicine, Clinical Medicine (General Practice Direction), Nursing, Nursing (Oral Nursing Direction), Stomatology, Clinical Medicine (Anesthesia Direction), Clinical Medicine (Medical Imaging Direction), Medical Laboratory Technology and Pharmacy.

The nursing profession is the earliest profession opened in six provinces and one city in East China with greater influence inside and outside the province, the clinical medicine profession is the first batch of demonstration professions in Jiangxi Province, and the stomatology profession is the characteristic profession of the college.

The college now has four affiliated hospitals, including the First People's Hospital of Fuzhou City (the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang University), and an affiliated hospital (the Affiliated Hospital of Fuzhou Medical College of Nanchang University), which is under construction according to the standards of tertiary hospitals and affiliated hospitals of medical undergraduate colleges.

The college has also established more than 150 internship bases across the country, which can fully meet the practical teaching needs of students at all levels and specialties.

The college has well-equipped laboratories with reasonable layout, and more than 120 laboratories of various types have been opened, among which the nursing laboratories have a total floor area of 2,300 square meters and 226 sets (pieces) of advanced nursing teaching equipment.

The clinical laboratory building with a floor area of 25,000 square meters and more than 110 pieces of large-scale advanced equipment has been completed and put into use, and the construction of the basic laboratory building in accordance with modern standards has also been fully launched construction.

With the development and change of the school level and scale, the college has put forward higher requirements for the group operation, intensive management, and thrifty and frugal running of the school.

In 2005, the college assessed the situation and made a decisive decision to introduce the then internationally advanced ISO9001:2000 quality management system into the overall management of the college.

Thirty-seven undergraduates from the class of 2016 enjoyed the exemption policy and all of them were admitted to 985 and 211 colleges and universities in China. There are 119 people successfully enrolled in master's degree programs, and the acceptance rate of graduate school is more than 23%.

The graduates of the college have been recognized by the society and praised by employers. From 2011 to 2016, the one-time employment rate of graduates for five consecutive years has reached more than 90%, and the employment quality of graduates has been steadily improving.
