Anecdotes about Ke Ling

Ke Ling appeared in the newspaper to look for her purse

Ke Ling once recalled, "I was interested in literature and art, and I contacted many writers in the literary world. In other people's opinion, I should have compiled the literature and art supplements, but I compiled the mass supplements 'Reader's Words', and the one that retained the most profound feelings was also 'Reader's Words'."

The Reader's Words, one of Wen Wei Po's supplements, was launched on New Year's Day 1946, and until the newspaper was closed on May 24, 1947, it met its readers almost daily. "The scope here is small, but the garden is open. From national affairs, down to the city trivial, and even personal pain and itch, there are opinions may wish to contribute, there are problems may wish to discuss, there are righteous indignation may wish to complain, there are sorrows and grievances or what is difficult to solve the difficult problems, may also wish to express it, or we can think of ways. Human beings have a natural duty to help each other, we can join hands here and push for sincerity."

Funny enough, on December 14, 1946, the day of the "Reader's Words" published Ke Ling's "Finding the purse": "On the 9th of this month, at about seven o'clock in the evening, in the Dumei Road, a tricycle lost a briefcase, which is mostly some irrelevant personal manuscripts and letters, and is not worth a lot of money. But there is a collection of Mr. Tao Xingzhi Memorial Education Fund donation book, because of busy life, did not try to recruit, unfortunately, and lost." "According to the situation judgment, this bag when the tricycle driver, respect in this request: will donate book and manuscript letters and notes give back, these things, others get useless, in my personal but not not related. I think if my friend, the pedicab driver, sees this notice, he will be able to help. The bag can be sent to you, labor and when the discretionary reward. Please hand over to the Yuanmingyuan Road, No. 149 Wen Wei Po I received, the end of the sense. Ke Ling would like to open."

Xu Kai-base and Ke Ling's relationship

The outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War that year, Xu Kai-base left his hometown from Ningbo to Shanghai. The next year, only sixteen years old, with a literary dream to "Wen Wei Po" Ke Ling edited "Century Wind" supplement, and then had the honor to meet with the predecessor of the Ke Ling, in the Ke Ling under the guidance of the beginning of his long writing career. From then on, the two men were teachers and disciples, and they knew each other for the rest of their lives.

August 14, 1977, after the tribulations of Ke Ling by Xu Kaibai edited, in the "Wen Wei Po" "Pen Club" supplement published an essay "Leaping Horses and Yang Ge's era", since then, in the literary world issued an indictment of the "Cultural Revolution", the voice of the human nature of the public. At this time, Xu Kaibei was in charge of the editorial of "PEN", actively promoting the publication of works by writers and artists of the older generation, such as Ba Jin's "A Letter", which had a great social impact. When Ke Ling published this article, his organizational ties had not yet been restored. Although he lived in the same city, Ke Ling corresponded frequently with Xu Kaibei for the publication of his article, calling each other by different names. On two occasions, Xu Kaibei expressed his "dissatisfaction" with his title, but Ke Ling fully deserved Xu Kaibei's respect. During the isolated island period of the last century, Xu Kaibei, who was still in college, was already helping out with the editorial work of Wanxiang magazine, which was edited by Ke Ling. After winning the war, Ke Ling took Xu Kaili to interview cultural figures returning from Chongqing.

Ke Ling recounted their relationship in a short preface: "Kaili and I have been friends of words for forty years, at first I edited publications and he wrote articles; later he edited publications and I contributed articles. In the rugged and changeable world, forty years of fine water flow is undoubtedly precious." He summarized Xu Kaibei's "literary and human qualities" very eloquently, and there is a classic description of Xu Kaibei's prose style: "village-girl charming". The later generation often quotes Mr. Ke Ling's eloquent explanation when evaluating Xu Kaibei's prose creations.

Throughout the decades of change, Xu Kaibei has always followed Mr. Ke Ling, from his youth to his white hair like snow. In the "Cultural Revolution", Xu Kaibei was reprimanded for not cooperating with external investigators to investigate Ke Ling's materials, and was expelled from the newspaper to labor in the three districts of Shanggang.
