TopographyThe Appalachian Mountains are located on the western side of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, essentially parallel to the coast, and are more than 2,300 kilometers long, with elevations of 1,000 to 1,500 meters above sea level. They consist of several parallel mountains. The inland plain is an inverted triangle that extends from the long border between the United States and Canada in the north to the Rio Grande River in the Atlantic Coastal Plain in the south. The Western Range consists of two mountains to the west, the Appalachians in the east, and the Sierra Nevada and Cascade ranges in the west, products of the Old Fold Movement. Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada, at 4,418 meters, is the highest point in the continental United States, and Mount Rainier in the Cascades, at 4,392 meters, is second only to Mount Whitney. The Western Sierra Plateau consists of the Colorado Plateau, the Wyoming Plateau, the Columbia Plateau, and the Grand Canyon, and is the most geologically complex region in the western United States. The United States has many rivers and lakes with complex water systems.
