Intracranial Aneurysm Intervention Illustration No. 4: What is the stent combined with spring coil technique?

The stent combined with spring coil technique is indicated for wide neck aneurysms

and has two modes of operation.

The first one is to ride across the aneurysm opening to place a stent, then insert a microcatheter through the stent mesh into the aneurysm cavity and deliver a spring coil to occlude the aneurysm. Finally the microcatheter is withdrawn.

The second type is to first insert the microcatheter into the aneurysm lumen, then place a stent across the aneurysm opening, subsequently deliver a spring coil via the microcatheter to embolize the aneurysm, and finally withdraw the microcatheter.

The end result of both approaches is to leave the stent in the aneurysm-carrying artery for life. The stent acts as a window pane to shield the spring coil from the aneurysm cavity, occluding the aneurysm while preserving blood flow to the carrier artery.
