In order to make it easier for consumers to understand the certification marks on the products they purchase, and to reduce the cost of various certifications for manufacturers, the Korea Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS) announced on August 20, 2008 that it would implement a new certification system on January 1, 2009 KC (Korea Certification) certification. The program will be implemented from July 2009 at the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and is expected to be expanded to all sectors by the end of 2010. The plan for the implementation of the KC mark is as follows: December 2008: Revision of the Basic Law on National Standards and its Enforcement Decree; July 2009: The Ministry of Knowledge Economy will start implementing and adopting the national unified KC mark; January 2009 to December 2010: Amendment of laws related to standards certification; January 2011: Application of the KC mark to all certifications.
