1872: 25 years after Siemens was founded, in 1872, business with China began. Siemens' first order in China was to supply China with pointer telegraphs, which marked the beginning of modern telecommunications in China.
1879: Siemens received an order from the Chinese government for "lighting equipment". Siemens supplied a 10-horsepower steam generator for lighting the port of Shanghai, which greatly improved the efficiency of the port. Werner von Siemens wrote to his brother Karl on November 3, 1879, that he was very confident that China would soon order lighting equipment from Siemens.
1899: Steam engine trains linking Beijing and Tianjin were not allowed to pass through the capital for fear of causing fires. So Siemens built China's first tram in Beijing. The tram track connects Majiapu, outside Beijing, with Hademen, inside the city. In the same year, Siemens built China's first power plant in Beijing to provide electricity for the city's lighting as well as for the tram tracks.
In 1987, Siemens began its quest to establish a joint venture plant in China. on October 31, 1988, Siemens reached an agreement to establish its first production-oriented enterprise in China, producing digital public **** telephone switching systems (EWSD). Subsequently, Beijing International Switching Systems Co., Ltd (BISC) was announced in November 1990 to meet the growing demand for public **** telephone systems in China.
In 1988, Siemens decided to establish a joint-venture plant for the production of computed tomography (CT) systems. This agreement eventually led to the founding of Siemens Medical Devices Ltd. in 1992, the first CT manufacturing facility Siemens established outside of Germany.
