In the United States. There are two regions that are leading in the development of biotechnology industry, these are Boston-Worcester-Lawrence region in Massachusetts and San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose region in California. In addition to these two regions, there are seven other regions that are also relatively well-developed in the biotechnology industry, and these are San Diego, California; the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill region of North Carolina; the Seattle-Tacoma, Washington -Bremerton area, New York-Northern New Jersey-Long Island area, Philadelphia-Wilmington-Atlantic City area, Los Angeles-Riverside- Orange region, and the Washington-Baltimore region. These nine regions account for more than three-fifths of the National Institutes of Health's (NIH) research expenditures and nearly two-thirds of biotechnology-related patents. Commercialization of biotechnology is much more concentrated in these regions. Three-quarters of the nation's biotech companies with 100 or more employees are in these regions, as are three-quarters of the biotech companies established in the past 10 years. Eight out of every nine dollars spent on venture capital in biopharmaceuticals goes to these regions, as does 95 percent of research collaboration funding. Many states have devised their own strategies for promoting the biotech industry.
And what about wages, I'll look for that.
Employees in California's biomedical industry earned a total of $20.5 billion in 2008, with an average annual income of nearly $75,000, the same as in 2007. Of course, within the biopharmaceutical industry, paychecks vary by field (see Figure 7). In 2008, California biopharmaceutical company employees earned an average of $109,000 per year, which was higher than the top of the overall industry list and comparable to 2007 wages. Wholesale trade companies were next, with their employees earning an average of $80,000 per year, but down 6 percent from 2007. Employees at academic research organizations, laboratory aids and medical device firms earned an average annual income in the $50,000 role.
Although copied, I feel this answer is more comprehensive. I'm looking forward to your laugh!
