5. In-depth tour of Vietnam

Yihuang has been in Southeast Asia for almost ten years, most of the time in Vietnam. Speaking of living in Vietnam is simply a miracle. Knowing that Vietnam is still watching CCTV4#039 inadvertently saw the beautiful anchorwoman of VTV TV, that charming eyes make me immediately interested in Vietnam. Compared to today's U.S. tourists, most of them look at a person on the website to take pictures and travelogues to understand the country. At that time, my internet was not that developed, there were very few travel websites and very few people went to Vietnam. Instead, it gave me a chance to learn more about Vietnamese culture, so I slowly started to read Tran Hero's The Pedicab Driver and The Taste of Green Papaya, and then read Duras's The Lover five times. 2008 was the year I took my annual vacation to Hanoi, Hue, and Hoi An. There were very few Chinese backpacking in China back then, so I couldn't when I came back I wouldn't have forgotten about it. Just in 2009. I've been to more than 20 Vietnamese cities, big and small, from SAPA (Sabah) in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south, all through. I've ridden a motorcycle from Da Nang along the waterfront to My Nai and back along mostly inland mountain roads for a total of **** 2,000 kilometers. I've also had the horror of riding from SAPA at 8am in the morning, over 600km of mountain roads and 200km of hiking in the dark mountains. It was already 24o Hanoi night clock. Now I I'm still a bit scared now when I think about it. Once the motorcycle's lights or engine breaks down, the consequences are unimaginable. But anyway, this is traveling. I'm already familiar with Vietnam. Although I can I can't speak Vietnamese fluently yet, I observed the country with my own eyes, tasted their delicious food, and strolled down every street that interested me. I realized that it is very different from China. The real Vietnam is far from simple. It's not as backward as we think it is, or as noisy and flashy as Beijing and Shanghai, but here you can find all the elements you need: chaos.

To understand a country, you rarely see its past and future only in the same travel pictures. The only thing you leave yourself with are the great mountains and water, which are quickly forgotten in other countries. This kind of travel can hardly be called a real traveler, even if you have traveled dozens or even hundreds of times. If you don't if you don't know enough about the culture of this country, a short trip can only become a quick meal and it's hard to describe the taste of the food. Next I will introduce some Vietnamese movies and books that you must watch before traveling to Vietnam, I hope it will help you to have an in-depth trip to Vietnam.

Books:

Author: Marguerite Duras Marguerite Duras

Novel synopsis:

Duras' masterpiece is an autobiographical novel, which won France's Prix de la Littérature du Goncourt in 1984. Set against the backdrop of the life of French colonizers in Vietnam and the theme of lust, the book describes the deep and hopeless love between a poor French girl and a rich young master China. I knew you and will always remember you. You were young then, and everyone said you were beautiful. Now, I've come here to tell you that, to me, you are more beautiful now than when you were young. Back then, you were a young woman, and I love your weathered face even more than I did then.

PERSONAL READ: I've actually been totally hooked on the Consciousness School since this book. The book is a mix of fake and real, with all sorts of seemingly nagging, nagging inner monologues of the self, putting the self into the work to synthesize and analyze it. After reading it, I really could have done without stopping. The book does not describe much about the weather, architecture, and humanity of Vietnam during the colonial period at that time, but a few short introductory words plus self-description can totally bring you back to a colonial Vietnam scene, where the complicated and bitter love reveals the scene of people's life nearly a hundred years ago.

The SorrowofWar

Author: Bao Ninh Bao Ninh

Novel synopsis:

The novel depicts all the experiences and testimonies of the main character, Kinh, a North Vietnamese soldier who goes from being a teenager of sixteen or seventeen to being a soldier in the war for ten years, and all the experiences and testimonies he has had when he returns to Hanoi after the war, all about the cruelty and absurdity of the war, as well as his slim personal hope. This war novel has a high popularity in Europe and America. His literary achievement far exceeds many similar novels in Asia.

#039;In the aftermath of this hard-won victory, a warrior like you, Keane, will never be normal again. You won you can't even speak in a normal voice, not in a normal way.

755-79000 has been translated into 15 languages since 1993, creating a big stir in the world. Scholars in Vietnam and abroad have naturally studied it. But its such a shame that I don't I don't think I've ever seen this book in Chinese translation for sale in China (I've heard that some publishers in China have translated it, but I haven't I haven't seen it. Perhaps, you can look for it carefully). Vietnamese literature has been poorly translated in China, but it's not available This doesn't mean that there are no good works in Vietnam. Most of the literature on the Vietnam War comes from Europe and America. In fact, some Vietnamese poets and writers who describe and reflect on the war are far superior in literary value to their foreign counterparts. Their understanding and analysis of the war far exceeds many similar works in our country. As one of the most brutal and influential wars in the world since World War II, its change and impact on the Vietnamese people and Vietnam can only be best described by the Vietnamese people. In his book, the great Vietnamese writer Pao Ninh expresses his views on the war in words, writing about the changes in the country and the changing fortunes of individuals before and after the war.

About Vietnamese Movies

Lover (1992)

Directed by Jean-Jacques ArnaudWritten by Jean-Jacques Arnaud/Grad Brach/Marguerite DurasStarring Jane March/Leung Ka Fai/Arnaud Giovanninetti/Frederic MeningerBased on the novel of the same name, I personally think it's the best Vietnamese erotica.

While the movie left Duras dissatisfied, complaining that the movie didn't completely fail to show the content of the work. But as a viewer, in addition to Leung's sexy ass and Jane the director took the 90s Vietnam scene back to the French colonial period decades ago. The various French colonial buildings, Cholon#039s Chinatown, the hot weather of Southeast Asia, and the various scenes of French, Chinese, and Vietnamese life are all very apt. While the movie could t have been perfect in the book with some conscious monologues, the content of this movie is still great as far as visuals go.

Tricycle Driver (1995)

Director: Tran Hero Screenwriter: Tran Hero Starring: Leong / Le Van Loc / Tran Daughter Yen Xi / Nguyen Ru Quynh / Nguyen Huong Phuoc

The movie's shocking depiction of the underclass in Vietnam, the gangsters' depiction of drug trafficking, killings and arson, sexual perversions, recreating a Vietnam full of depravity and evil.

Hero Tran, a Frenchman of Vietnamese descent, has a thorough understanding of Vietnam his bones of the national society and culture. Both the taste of green papaya and this movie show the unique side of Vietnamese society from different angles. The most eye-catching trishaw driver should be Tony Leung at first, but in fact the real protagonist is the bottom Vietnamese trishaw driver. I still remember how scared I was after watching this movie, my beautiful vision of Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) was completely shattered. After living in Vietnam for many years, I have seen the huge gap between rich and poor and all kinds of ugly human nature in Saigon, a rapidly developing city, but I still y love the diversity and tolerance of this city.

The Taste of Green Papaya (1993)

Director: Tran Hero Screenwriter: Tran Hero Starring: Tran Woman Yen Xi/ Ru Quynh/

A family of a movie about the relationship between a Vietnamese maid and her employer. The movie is very cozy, the picture is exquisite and the scene is very Vietnamese.

If you want to take your time and savor the real Vietnamese culture, this is an excellent movie. Most of the movie takes place in a very nice traditional Vietnamese house with occasional street scenes. If you watch this movie right after you've seen "The Pedicab Driver," you'll be shocked by Hero Tran's artistic expression of genius. The movie is slow paced, but extremely beautiful. Those beautiful gardens, plants, even every ant, every drop of water in the camera leaves the director's inherent brand of Vietnamese culture y.

Three Seasons (1999)

Directed by Tony Bui Written by Tony Bui

The film is about three feelings about the Vietnamese landscape: in the spring, Sin, a country girl, copies poems for her employer, Mr. Do, and the two of them form an ungrateful friendship; in the dry season, Hai, a cyclo driver, accidentally meets Lian, a prostitute, in love; and in the rainy season, James, a Vietnam veteran, searches for his daughter in grief and pain. This movie truly shows various life scenes and characters' feelings in Vietnamese society during the South Vietnam period, and it's very pathetic.

The movie is set in the Vietnam Station and Vietnam period, and you can clearly see various Vietnam scenes in the 70s. The love story of Hai, a yellow bus driver who stumbles upon the prostitute Lien during the dry season is even more touching. The Vietnamese music and songs in the movie are beautiful. Sometimes when I have time, I turn on the movie clip and listen to it slowly for a few minutes.

I hope the above will help you. In fact, traveling is not about taking some good pictures. If you can leave a little space in your heart for some words and historical images that can move you, the trip will be worthwhile.
