On September 17, 2009, the main station building of the new Taiyuan South Railway Station, the West Station Building, started to carry out the steel structure roof lifting construction, and the station building entered the stage of building the overall framework. The new Taiyuan South Station consists of five engineering areas, including the West Station House, East Station House, elevated waiting halls, and wind and rain shelters on both sides of the north and south platforms. West station house has a total construction area of 38,000 square meters, the total amount of actual steel 5500 tons, the amount of concrete nearly 40,000 cubic meters. It is understood that the next steel structure roof cover and roof installation, station building external stone curtain wall installation and other projects, will be completed in early 2010.

At 10:18 on September 9, 2010, the last steel truss of Taiyuan South Railway Station was successfully lifted, marking the complete topping out of the main steel structure of the station building of the new Taiyuan South Railway Station. The total amount of steel used was 43,000 tons.
On October 20, 2010, the Taiyuan South Station project entered a key implementation stage.
By the end of 2012, the main body of the underground transportation hub project in the West Square of Taiyuan South Railway Station was fully completed
On August 20, 2013, the construction of the line dialing of Taiyuan South Railway Station was successfully completed.

April 10, 2014, construction vehicles are working in the west square of Taiyuan South Railway Station. The main building of Taiyuan South Railway Station has been completed and entered the commissioning stage, while the rest of the projects have entered the sprint stage. It is expected to be completed and put into operation on July 1, 2014, as the construction of the square in front of the station and the surrounding supporting road facilities are underway.

According to the requirements of China Railway Corporation, Taiyuan South Station will be put into operation on July 1, 2014 to open the Daxi Passenger Dedicated Line (i.e., Datong to Xi'an Passenger Dedicated Line). the section from Taiyuan to Xi'an will be opened to traffic in July 2014, and the section north of Taiyuan in 2015 will be opened to traffic.
