Differences between the Wenchuan and Yushu earthquakes

Comparison of four major earthquakes in recent years.

Earthquake energy (magnitude): 8.8 for the Chilean earthquake, 8.0 for the Wenchuan earthquake, 7.3 for the Haiti earthquake, and 7.1 for the Yushu earthquake.

Destructiveness (intensity of the main affected areas): Wenchuan earthquake 11 degrees, Haiti earthquake 10 degrees, Yushu earthquake 9 degrees, Chile earthquake 8 degrees. In fact although the Chilean earthquake had the highest magnitude, it was actually the least destructive due to the particular type of earthquake and geographical conditions. On the contrary the Wenchuan earthquake was the most destructive and had the largest area of damage. As you can also see through the TV footage, entire mountain peaks can often be seen collapsing in the Wenchuan quake, whereas the Chilean quake could only be seen as minor cracks in the ground.

Losses (number of dead and missing): 200,000 to 500,000 in the Haiti quake; 87,164 in the Wenchuan quake; about 2,300 in the Yushu quake; and about 800 in the Chilean quake.

Major affected populations: about 14 million in the Wenchuan quake; about 9 million in the Haiti quake; about 300,000 in the Chile quake; and about 300,000 in the Yushu quake. To be clear, Yushu Prefecture has only 300,000 people, but it's over 100,000 near the epicenter. Haiti, on the other hand, is a small, bulletproof country with almost all of the country's 9 million people near the epicenter. The 300,000 citizens of the Chilean city of Concepción, on the other hand, are lucky enough to live 90 kilometers away from the epicenter. In terms of population density in the affected areas, Haiti is the highest. And it should be noted that the logistical strength of the relief force is often burdened with far more than the number of people in the relief team. In the first few days of the Wenchuan relief effort, the logistics system in the Chengdu theater had to resupply not 140,000 people, but 14 million.

How economically developed are the disaster areas: Chile is the most developed, with Wenchuan and Yushu in the middle and Haiti the least developed.

Transportation conditions: Wenchuan is the worst, Yushu is second, Haiti is better, and Chile is the best. Wenchuan transportation is the worst mainly because of the high mountains and deep valleys of the terrain and the serious damage caused by the earthquake. Although Yushu is a high plateau area, but the transportation was less damaged. Haiti is a seaport and Chile is a plain.

Meteorological conditions: Wenchuan is the worst, Yushu is second, Chile is better, and Haiti is the best.

Survival conditions: Yushu is the worst, Wenchuan is second, Haiti is slightly worse, and Chile is the best. The high plateau of 4,000 meters above sea level is basically the limit of life.

Secondary disasters: Wenchuan is the worst, Haiti is second, Yushu is third, and Chile is the least. Wenchuan's secondary disasters are mainly due to the high mountains and deep ravines. Haiti is mainly due to the overexploitation of mountainous areas and excessive destruction of vegetation.

Rescue conditions: Wenchuan is the worst, Yushu is second, Haiti is worse, and Chile is the best.

Wenchuan earthquake rescue features, poor meteorological conditions and extremely poor terrain conditions, almost no usable roads, the first few days completely dependent on human rescue, the disaster is great, the mobilization of human and material resources is great. In fact with 140,000 people averaging more than 1,500 kilometers of maneuvering distance (equivalent to from Berlin to Kiev), and 1 million tons of supplies transported every day, the Chinese army has demonstrated a world-shattering mobilization ability and mobilization capacity.

The Yushu rescue is characterized by a high plateau environment that is close to the limit of human survival, making rescue extremely difficult, and non-professional rescue teams are purely equivalent to sending death plus adding to the chaos. Transportation in extremely remote areas should have been desperate, but the surprise is that the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, which opened in 2006, the 214 National Highway, which opened in 2008, and the Batang Airport, which opened in 2009, have become Yushu's lifelines. Meanwhile, the mobilization of rescue forces, though smaller, is far more modern and specialized than in the Wenchuan earthquake.

Haiti rescue characteristics: national strength basically collapsed, completely dependent on foreign forces. International assistance is a drop in the bucket and is mainly used to protect its own interests. Man-made disasters are fiercer than natural disasters, and Haitians' despair for the country is worse than death.

Chile rescue characterized: 24 hours after the earthquake, the president does not know what happened in the affected areas ..... The damage caused by this earthquake is not particularly serious for earthquake-prone Chile, and rescue is not difficult. But the disaster zone was out of control for a while, making the tragedy wider.
