Talking about the HRV function of Canon, Boonen and Gautschi sports watches
I. Preface
Friends who are concerned about sports watches will find that a lot of mainstream sports watches sold on the market at the moment are equipped with the HRV function which sounds a bit esoteric in name, does it have any guidance for daily sports or not? This function in the end on the daily movement has no guidance significance? In the end, is it not a business in order to collect money to fool people with the IQ tax?
Next, this article selects three common sports watch brands on the market to compare and contrast the HRV function provided by their products.
Second, what is HRV
HRV, that is, the English word Heart Rate Variability translated into Chinese, that is, heart rate variability, used to assess the recovery of an indicator of exercise. It refers to the amount of variation in time between successive beats of the heart and each beat. When the human heart beats, the intervals between each beat are not uniform, and this irregularity is perfectly normal and healthy.
Three, detailing the difference
1. Gamma (automatic continuous monitoring)
Gamma HRV is divided into two modes: single measurement and continuous measurement.
1.1 Single measurement of HRV:
For Canon, this situation Canon calls it HRV pressure fraction, which needs to be linked to the heart rate belt for high-precision measurement.
1.1.1 Application Scenarios:
HRV Stress Test: 3-minute HRV Stress Fraction test, requires the use of a heart rate belt, the principle is similar to that of a professional athlete using the morning pulse to assess the recovery state of the next morning, the HRV is more sensitive compared to the morning pulse.
1.2 Continuous HRV Measurement:
Continuous HRV monitoring is achieved with the high wristwatch accuracy Elevate V4 optical heart rate monitoring sensor.
1.2.1 Application Scenarios:
Sleep HRV status: personalized tracking models are formed through 3 weeks of continuous wear, culminating in the establishment of a rolling data chase baseline that lasts 90 days.
Training HRV status: through 7 days HRV monitoring data, combined with the HRV status of the day and the exercise status at that time, to assess the effect of the current exercise.
Single HRV Absolute: Healthy Snapshot to quickly measure the absolute HRV value at that time.
All Day Stress Tracking: Utilizing the data from HRV monitoring, algorithmically converted into a 0-100 stress score to assess the stress of daily life and training process (training, physical activity, sleep, nutritional supplementation, and life stress all affect the All Day Stress Index results).
1.2.2 HRV Assisted Training:
Giameng has designed the following series of tools for assisted training through the study of HRV:
Note: Intelligent Coach will dynamically adjust the training arrangement of item 8 according to the monitoring of items 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
2. Bonanza (automatic continuous monitoring)
Traditional sports watch manufacturer POLAR can also provide continuous HRV monitoring during sleep, and the results of the monitoring, through POLAR's exclusive development of the Nightly Recharge Recovery Evaluation System, SleepWise system, to guide the intensity of the training recovery assessment, to avoid hitting the wall.
2.1 Nightly Recharge
Nightly Recharge status is calculated by combining the two components of ANS recovery and sleep recovery and weighting them together. An assessment was obtained by comparing last night's sleep to the usual level of the past 28 days.
Nightly Recharge is categorized into 6 levels: very poor, poor, poor, fair, good, and very good.
The ANS Recovery Principle forms an ANS model by monitoring: heart rate, heart rate variability, and respiration rate during approximately the first four hours of sleep and provides information on the degree of nocturnal relaxation of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), which can be used to guide the next day's training.
POLAR absolute HRV values are monitored during sleep and data curve reports are formed.
2.2 SleepWise
The SleepWise feature automatically uses last night's data to analyze the day ahead and make predictive recommendations about when you should rest the next night.
3. Gautschi (Manual Single Monitoring)
What exactly does Gautschi's manual single HRV measurement show the user after the measurement?
Selected from Gautschi's official website, Gautschi's HRV display does not show the absolute value of each measurement, but only the "HRV index" converted by Gautschi's algorithm after the measurement.
Gautschi uses three RMS values to establish the first "personal reference value". (Compared to Gamma's 3-week baseline with 90 days of rolling data, or Bonnen's 28-day average baseline, this is a very weak reference.)
Gautschi's HRV manual single measurement + exponential conversion, which does not show the actual absolute value of each measurement, is paired with 3 measurements to form a baseline, which creates an additional problem: the manual single measurement does not allow you to track and record the recovery of HRV during nighttime sleep.
Three single measurements cannot form a long enough historical average to utilize mathematical and statistical algorithms to form an individual model that better matches the user's physical condition. Three single measurements do not create a long enough historical average to utilize mathematical and statistical algorithms to avoid the interference of episodic bad data on the results. It is not possible to take advantage of automated monitoring to reduce external interference and bad sampling data.
Users are unable to directly see the actual measured HRV absolute value of the Gautschi watch, and are unable to determine whether each HRV measurement has been inaccurately measured due to misuse, or due to other external factors, and are therefore unable to intervene and eliminate the undesirable effects of erroneous data.
The Apex2 (Pro) also uses a single HRV measurement, which is converted to a Gautschi HRV index display, but also does not display the absolute value of the HRV measurement, and suffers from the same drawbacks as described above.
Four, Postscript
In comparison, both Canon and Bonanza can utilize the HRV data to form an assessment of the trainer's recovery status throughout the day, guiding the training and avoiding injuries caused by over-exercise.
Gautschi's single measurement of HRV is currently unable to form a data connection with other recovery systems, which is slightly more helpful for daily training than Canon or Boonen. For the time being, I can only say that it's better than nothing.
Fifth, last
The article's final point, quoting a friend's point of view, I also very much agree with: equipment is always an auxiliary means, to maintain a reasonable gradual training, is the most important factor in reaching the goal, I wish my friends into the pit of happy.
