The history of the school can be traced back to November 1951, the People's Liberation Army's 18th Army founded the Tibetan cadres training class, through the Tibetan Military District Cadre School, Tibetan local cadre school, Tibetan administrative cadre school and other stages of development.
In 1965 and 1975, the school went through the development stage of Tibet Normal School and Tibet Normal College, and in July 1985, the school was officially renamed as Tibet University, and since 1999, the Tibet Autonomous Region School of Arts, the Tibet Higher School of Medical Sciences and the Medical Department of the Tibet Institute of Nationalities, the Tibet Autonomous Region School of Finance and Economics, and the Tibet Agricultural and Animal Husbandry College were successively merged with the University of Tibet.
