I. Basic Information
The Department of Animal Science is responsible for the teaching of professional courses of the key undergraduate majors in animal science, and also for the teaching of graduate students in the doctoral and master's degree authorization points of the first-level disciplines of animal husbandry and the two doctoral and master's degree points of "Animal Genetics and Breeding" and "Animal Nutrition and Feed Science" and the master's degree enrollment points of agricultural extension in the field of breeding. It is now the key discipline of animal husbandry in Chongqing Municipality, with outstanding professional advantages and obvious characteristics. The projects undertaken mainly include the National 973, the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology support program projects, the Ministry of Agriculture industry special projects, the Ministry of Science and Technology Achievement Transformation Fund, the Spark Industry Project and the Chongqing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and so on more than 20 projects. With the conservation of fishery resources in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and aquatic biotechnology research as the leader, the discipline drives the research direction of aquaculture and nutrition and feed, and aims at environmentally friendly eco-fishery and pollution-free aquaculture, with outstanding disciplinary characteristics, obvious advantages in location, and the comprehensive strength in the leading position in the western region. It has undertaken more than 40 projects of national 973, national support program, provincial and ministerial level and other kinds of projects. He has published more than 120 academic papers and written 8 monographs and textbooks.
Faculty: Southwest University College of Animal Science and Technology, Department of Aquatic Sciences has a strong and reasonable structure of the faculty, there are currently 21 staff, 17 full-time teachers (87% of the external margins), there are 10 postgraduate supervisors, of which 3 professors, 9 associate professors, lecturers, 4; laboratory staff of 3 people, including 1 senior laboratory technician, laboratory technicians, 2 people. Talent training: the cultivation goal of this discipline is to cultivate a solid theoretical foundation of aquatic science and systematic professional knowledge, to understand the progress and trend of aquatic and related life sciences, and to be able to independently analyze and solve the theoretical and practical problems within the discipline; to be able to play a key role in the field of aquatic science in higher education, scientific research institutes and related government departments, production enterprises, such as the teaching, research and development, and management of work. The discipline of aquaculture at Southwest University has formed four distinctive research directions:
(1) Fish Genetic Development and Resource Enhancement Direction
This direction mainly focuses on the conservation, exploration and utilization of aquatic organisms' germplasm resources and genetic resources. The key research content includes: the Three Gorges Reservoir area fish stocking effect assessment and tracking monitoring, the genetic diversity of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the identification of germplasm, the preservation of the original species; the molecular genetic markers of excellent traits, the cloning of important functional genes, the establishment of genetic transformation system and bioengineering breeding; model organism zebrafish molecular development biology research and economic fish growth and development regulation and other research. We have conducted basic and applied research on white sturgeon, Chinese barb, Iwahara carp, Pelteobagrus fulvidraco and other famous fish as well as the model organism zebrafish, and achieved a series of theoretical results: we were the first to identify the developmental function of IGFBP-3, the IGF signaling pathway controlling vertebrate growth and development in the world; we have elucidated the genetic structure of several economic fishes, and we have carried out a series of key studies on the digestive physiology of the important cultured fishes. He has also conducted key research on the digestive physiology of important cultured fish. He has completed more than 10 provincial (ministerial) and municipal scientific research projects, and is currently undertaking 5 projects including the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He has published more than 10 high-level research papers in international academic journals, including The Journal of Biological Chemistry (IF>6.0), Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, Biotechnology Letters, Acta Zoologica Sinica, Oceans and Lakes. More than 10 high-level research papers, including 4 SCI papers. Some of the results of this direction have been evaluated as "international leading level" by the peer experts, and this direction has a certain leading advantage in the country.
(2) Aquaculture and Disease Prevention and Control
This direction is mainly engaged in the theoretical and technological research on aquaculture. The key research contents include: pollution-free aquaculture, ecological fishery in natural waters, facility fishery, intensive aquaculture, aquatic animal breeding, introduction and development of new species of aquaculture, aquatic bait organisms cultivation as well as aquaculture environment regulation and control. Research on prevention and control of aquatic animal diseases. Key research content includes: aquatic animal pathogen diagnosis, development of pollution-free fish medicine (including Chinese herbal medicine) and pharmacology and pharmacodynamics, immunization and prevention of aquatic animal diseases and mechanisms. In this direction, we have carried out research on the development of the application technology of transplantation and domestication, artificial breeding and adult fish culture for the wild populations of many famous fish in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, such as Chinese barb and Iwahara carp, etc. We have also carried out research on the principles and technology of fish farming in inland ponds and rice paddies, and taken the lead in carrying out systematic research on the technology of fish farming in rivers and nets, and screened out Chinese medicinal prescriptions with antimicrobial effects for the bacterial infections that are more hazardous to fishes. For bacterial infectious diseases that are more harmful to fish, the Chinese medicine prescription with antibacterial effect has been screened out, and the oral vaccine for fish is under research. He has undertaken more than 10 projects and published more than 30 papers, and has won the second prize of the Harvest Program of the Ministry of Agriculture for 80:20 culture and new technology in freshwater ponds. This direction has strong regional characteristics in the country.
(3) Aquatic Animal Nutrition and Feed Direction
This direction is mainly engaged in the research of aquatic animal nutrition mechanism and feed preparation. Key research includes: aquatic animal nutrition physiology, nutritional requirements and metabolism, nutrition and quality, nutrition and immunity, nutrition and environment, as well as the formulation and processing of artificial full-price compound feed for economically important aquatic animals. He has systematically carried out research on the nutritional requirements and feed formulation of grass carp, and conducted basic research on the nutritional requirements of a variety of famous fishes in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River (Iwahara carp, longnose shad, Chinese barb, yellow catfish, etc.) and the Chinese fiddler crab, etc. He has undertaken six projects and published more than 40 papers. The optimization of artificial feed formula for grass carp won the third prize of Chongqing Scientific and Technological Progress. This direction has a certain influence in the country.
(4) Direction of Fishery Resources and Environment
This direction mainly focuses on the ecology of the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and fishery resources. The key research content includes: the change pattern of economically important fish resources in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, the impact of fishery production on the environmental quality of natural waters, the process and mechanism of eutrophication, the ecological restoration of damaged waters, and the evaluation of the environmental quality of fisheries. He has carried out a series of researches on the ecological prevention and control of water eutrophication, biological evaluation of water pollution, changing law of fishery resources in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, evaluation of the impact of hydraulic construction on fish resources, and the hazards of heavy metal pollution in water bodies and its mechanism, etc. He has undertaken 12 projects and published more than 20 papers. This direction has obvious regional research characteristics.
