What does the heart color ultrasound EF46% mean?

EF46% of color Doppler echocardiography showed that the ventricular ejection fraction was 46%.

Under normal circumstances, the left ventricular ejection fraction is ≥ 50%; Right ventricular ejection fraction ≥40%. If it is less than this value, it is cardiac insufficiency.

Left ventricular ejection fraction refers to the percentage of stroke output to ventricular end-diastolic volume. When the ventricle contracts, all the blood in the ventricle cannot be injected into the artery. In normal adults at rest, the diastolic volume of the left ventricle is about 125mL, the right ventricle is about 137mL, and the output is 60-80mL.

The percentage of stroke volume to ventricular diastolic volume is called ejection fraction, which is generally greater than 50% and belongs to the normal range. The ejection fraction of human body at rest is about 55%~65%. Ejection fraction is related to myocardial contractility. The stronger the myocardial contractility, the more the stroke output and the greater the ejection fraction.

Extended data

Echocardiography is the most commonly used method to measure ejection fraction, and another less commonly used method is cardiac catheterization. Interventional diagnosis and treatment is to migrate to the heart by inserting a catheter into the artery of the arm or leg, so that the heart can be developed under the action of contrast agent to understand the function of the heart.

Sometimes, doctors also use other imaging techniques to measure the ejection fraction, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT) or nuclear medicine scanning.
