Is erythritol harmful to health?

A study published in the journal Nature Medicine on February 28th showed that erythritol may cause thrombosis, which is related to the increased risk of cardiovascular events, including myocardial infarction, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases. For a time, discussions about "erythritol substitutes" came one after another.

The researchers first conducted a preliminary study in 1 157 people who had received heart disease risk assessment and had 3-year outcome data. By analyzing the chemical substances in blood, it was observed that the compound levels of various artificial sweeteners (especially erythritol) were related to the increased risk of heart disease and stroke in the future during the three-year follow-up. This correlation was later confirmed in an independent cohort study.

They also conducted a prospective intervention study among eight healthy volunteers: after volunteers ingested 30 grams of erythritol beverage (about a bottle of soda water with erythritol added), their plasma levels were tested. The results showed that the erythritol levels of all volunteers continued to increase, exceeding the threshold of increased blood coagulation risk within 2-3 days.

The researchers said that their findings may indicate that increased erythritol levels are related to an increased risk of thrombosis.

What is erythritol?

Erythritol is a filling sweetener and a four-carbon sugar alcohol with the molecular formula of C4H 10O4. Widely existing in nature, it can be made from glucose fermentation, which has a refreshing sweetness, is not easy to absorb moisture, is stable at high temperature, melts in the mouth and has a mild cool feeling. The general character is white crystal, slightly sweet and cool.

Simply put, erythritol is a sugar alcohol sweetener, which contains almost no calories, does not cause tooth decay and dental caries, and does not affect blood sugar. It can stimulate the brain to secrete exciting substances, producing energy and happiness; But sugar is also a devil, which directly threatens people's health and causes obesity, dental caries and other problems.

In fact, erythritol began to be produced and used as a food additive as early as 1990, and only in recent years has the popularity of sugar gradually entered the public's field of vision.

superiority

Can be a good substitute for sugar.

Erythritol has a sweetness similar to that of sugar, without some bad aftertaste of substituting sweeteners, which is very suitable for ketogenesis and low-carbon diet.

Contribute to weight management

Erythritol can enjoy sweetness without any calories. This makes it easier to stick to any diet.

Will not increase blood sugar and insulin levels.

It is suitable for diabetic patients and helps to control blood sugar level.

Can help increase satiety.

Some studies have shown that erythritol can affect the release of satiety hormone in intestine and slow down gastric emptying.

Excluding net carbohydrates.

If you are a ketogenic or low-carbon diet, you don't need to count the amount of erythritol in the daily clean carbon water.

disadvantaged

Eating too much at one time can lead to digestive problems.

For example, abdominal distension and exhaust lead to serious social death. ...

Often used with artificial sweeteners.

Because the sweetness of erythritol is only about 70% of sucrose, some products will add other ingredients to increase the sweetness, so it needs to be carefully screened when used.

Most of them are produced by genetically modified organisms.

Because the risk of eating genetically modified food for a long time is unknown, you need to know more about the source of production if you mind.

With the rise of the zero-calorie sugar market, there are more and more sugar-free foods. Erythritol with low sugar, low calorie and low fat is increasingly welcomed by healthy people and beauty lovers. Suitable for all kinds of food, such as chocolate, baked goods, candy, soft drinks, candy and so on.

Drinks

In recent years, it has been applied to the development of new zero-calorie and low-calorie beverages, which can increase the sweetness, heaviness and lubricity of beverages, reduce the bitterness and improve the flavor of beverages.

Bakery (product)

It is an indispensable raw material for high-quality baking products. In addition to increasing sweetness, coloring and preservation, proper addition is also an important condition to ensure good quality of products.

Cake biscuit

It is difficult to prove that baked products can reduce calories because they contain high-content flour, cream and sucrose. However, the application of erythritol can easily solve this problem.

additive

Erythritol can also be used to produce high-quality additives for baking products, such as sauce, cream, cream icing and some surface decorations.

Candy class

At present, the candy market has been transformed and extended to related products with low sugar and low calorie sugar groups, which has become the focus of consumption and development in the international candy market and has great market potential.

Chocolate

Erythritol has the characteristics of good thermal stability and low hygroscopicity, which is conducive to promoting flavor formation and reducing the energy of chocolate by 34%.

pharmacy

Erythritol has the characteristics of anti-caries, anti-oxidation, moisturizing and incombustibility, which makes it expand in the fields of medicine and daily chemical.
