Kai-fu Lee's Seventh Letter to Contemporary College Students

2/kloc-seven kinds of talents most needed in the 20th century-we all know that the most valuable talents in the 2nd/kloc-0th century are talents. What kind of talents are they? This is the theme of my speech today. I think there is a big assumption in my speech that the talents needed in 2 1 century are very different from those in the 20th century and19th century, because there were several revolutions in 2 1 century. 2 1 century, we rely more on the creation of the brain and on equal competition. Without national boundaries, the world was razed to the ground. People from any country can cooperate or compete with people from another country, and they can all access, use and enjoy the same information. Unlike in the past, whoever can monopolize information can exert considerable value to another person or to that company.

Today's information, only because of enjoyment, can play its true potential. So under such circumstances, everyone can choose freely and compete on an equal footing, and they will take the initiative to obtain their own information and pursue their own interests. They expect the company they work for to adopt decentralized management rather than control management. Because in the 2 1 century, a person creates wealth by his own brain power, he is smart and creative, he competes with everyone in the world on an equal footing, and then everyone has the same information, and no one wants to be the gear of a company under unfair control. Everyone wants to give full play to their potential. He wants to work in a company so that every employee can do his own thing with dignity. What's more, in 2 1 century, everything has become very fast. You think that a certain technology or company is very popular, and suddenly a new technology or company has emerged. This is because the boundaries between the Internet, every country and every field are constantly being eliminated, and people all over the world can work, compete and cooperate together. Therefore, in such an environment, what the 2 1 century needs is no longer the so-called blue-collar or white-collar workers who are obedient, have no opinions of their own and make unremitting efforts in the 20 th century. What is more needed is the seven kinds of people I want to talk about in my speech.

The 1 of these seven people is the practitioner of innovation. Speaking of all the people today, I will quote a sentence that I think is very good. Then who said the first sentence? I told you. This sentence is related to innovation, which will be mentioned later. What I want to say is that in the 2 1 century, the truly valuable people are those who can innovate. He is not a man who can only do things in other people's ways. He is not just a chess piece or a gear that listens to things. Because, in today's competition, the only competitive advantage that a company can continue is its innovation. Everything can be easily imitated, but innovation is difficult to imitate. And once innovation is imitated, your only way is to continue to innovate. Therefore, a group of energetic and innovative employees is the only wealth that can bring sustainable competitiveness to enterprises.

You might say, does Kai-fu Lee want to say that Google and other technology companies should study computer science and do the most in-depth research, which is innovation? Actually, it's not. Every field can be innovated, that is, innovation in every different field makes every job colorful. I can give you an example. If you drive on the Silicon Valley section of California Highway 10 1, you may see a billboard. There is no company name and no advertising words on the whole billboard, just a simple "(the first decimal prime number that can be found in the sequence of' e'). com”。 Many smart people who work in Silicon Valley saw this advertisement by car. When they get home, they will calculate it. Some use computers, others use mathematical methods to calculate. After calculating the answer, they log on to this website and find another more difficult topic. Then they did this topic again, then they went to another website, and they did one topic after another. Finally, they found themselves in a very special website, which is Google's recruitment website. From this example, we can see that in an innovative company like Google, its innovation is actually far more than one engineering department. You can see that the recruitment market is full of creativity.

Another thing to note about innovation is that the innovation in the 2 1 century must be real-time and practical. Because of the existence of the Internet, the pace of every company is very fast. If you spend a lot of time doing some verification, some user surveys, and spend another year or two compiling and testing something, a product is likely to be out of date after four or five years. So in this 2 1 century, it is not enough to be an innovator, but to be an innovator. This answers my above sentence: what matters is not innovation, but useful innovation. It is meaningless to innovate just for the sake of innovation, but it is meaningful to do beneficial innovation. I remember when I was in SCI company, one of the biggest mistakes I made was that I only thought of innovation, not practice. We made a very cool 3D browser, and no one may use it today. At that time, every time we gave a demonstration, the audience's chin would drop and say, Wow, how can you make such a cool thing! But we forget that there is no market for this cool thing. The final result was quite a failure, which gave me a very painful experience, especially seeing that 100 employees were unemployed, which made me make a decision, that is, the above sentence.

Although we want to innovate, we don't innovate for the sake of innovation, but to do something useful. If we look back at history, we can see many successful talents, some of whom are innovative, some are pragmatic, some have developed left brain and some have developed right brain. But those who really make great contributions to the world, I think they are not only innovators, but also practitioners, such as Edison, Bill Gates, Larry and Sergey, are all good examples. A true innovation practitioner can't forget practice every time he innovates, nor can he forget innovation in practice. I think such people are indispensable talents in the 2 1 century.

Secondly, I think what is really needed is a cross-domain synthesizer. I just heard that Zhu Kezhen College is multidisciplinary in itself, and the intensive classes are also composed of students of different majors. This really fits the so-called synthesizer very well. I believe that in the future of China and the whole world, we need more talents, not only those who have learned a subject deeply, but also those who can learn their own subject well and combine it with other fields. The reason is actually very simple. If there are 1000 kinds of knowledge in the world, you can learn these knowledge in depth, but the knowledge of two people can produce new knowledge through cross-collision, and the collision of three people can produce one billion combinations.

Take the computer as an example. If you study computers and are interested in psychology, such interdisciplinary synthesis may make some contributions to user interface or usability testing. So the emergence of many new fields is a good opportunity, because the past two disciplines collided. If you study a subject too deeply, you may fall into a dead end and lose the opportunity to innovate and practice. What really matters is not analysis, not in-depth analysis, but synthesis, and how to have a chance to synthesize.

Therefore, my advice to all students is, of course, to learn your major well, but at the same time, we should also consider whether there are other majors that interest us. Whether the latest ideas of these two majors can be combined to do something both creative and practical may be some opportunities with the most room for growth.

The third kind of person who needs most is a collaborator with high emotional intelligence. EQ is nine times more important than IQ. This sentence comes from Daniel Gorman's book EQ. The book EQ talks about some differences between EQ and IQ, which is more important. He did a survey and found the leaders of thousands of enterprises. He studies what makes these excellent leaders different from ordinary leaders. The most important difference of his research conclusion is not IQ, but EQ, which is nine times more important than IQ.

Emotional intelligence includes how to cooperate with others, including a sense of self, including a kind of self-management, and also including some ability to unite, cooperate and socialize with others. The importance of EQ is very significant in 2 1 century, because in 2 1 century, we need global cooperation and cross-domain synthesis. For example, if you study psychology, you should cooperate with people who study computers to make a user interface. Cross-field cooperation, transnational cooperation and cross-language cooperation are all necessary. So, in the past, you might have been regarded as a withdrawn and arrogant genius in many circumstances, but now this situation has changed a lot.

As I mentioned in the concept of talents before, a big difference between this information society and the industrial society in the past is that the best talents in the information society, a programmer and a scientist, may be 3 times, 5 times, 10 times or 20 times or even more better than ordinary people. But what I want to add here is that even though his skills are much better, if he is a withdrawn and arrogant person who can't cooperate or even make the team unable to work, then he will have a negative effect on the team.

When we do management, we must also take into account that if you want to build a very healthy team, whether you work in Google or the future Google camp, you must have good results on the premise that everyone is willing to cooperate objectively with others and has high EQ, especially in a century where EQ and cooperation are so important. Therefore, my advice to all students is that you should take every opportunity to participate in club work and build more foundation for cooperation with others, whether in class, in club projects or in summer work. In addition to reading, let yourself become a high emotional intelligence student who can unite and cooperate, respect others and listen to others objectively.

The fourth kind of person is an efficient communicator. If a person has thoughts but can't express them, he is actually a person without thoughts. This sentence is actually quite reasonable. I think many students of science and engineering here may think that thinking is enough, but this sentence tells us that you can't just exchange ideas, in fact, you have no thoughts. In fact, this sentence is not an exaggeration. Under the premise that the whole world is information in 2 1 century, a good information dissemination channel still has to go through people. How people spread information depends on communication. A person has good communication skills, and he can spread a difficult message to others well. If a person's communication ability is poor and he can't spread information, then others may look down on him and think that he has no thoughts. Therefore, communication skills are very much in need of learning. How can we acquire this communication ability? I can give some good advice to my classmates. When you communicate, you must know your audience. You must know what your audience is thinking and what benefits they can get from your speech, that is, what benefits they can get from you. Also, we should pay attention to the way of speaking, not preaching, but guiding. When you communicate with others, you should first think about what your main message is and express it in a way acceptable to the audience.

The fifth talent in urgent need is to love workers. Because after the whole world is tied, everyone is equal. If you can do a job you love very much, then you may be thinking about your job while sleeping, taking a shower and eating. You may be more enthusiastic to do your work. You don't think your job is a boring thing, but something you can enjoy. So there is a saying that one day an American friend came to my office and said that you Confucius are really smart. I said what happened. He said, you see how reasonable this sentence is: if you find a job you love, you will never work for a day in your life. I told him thank you for praising Confucius, but I really don't remember Confucius saying this. Later, when I drove home that day, I realized that it might be that "knowing is not as good as being good, and being good is not as good as being happy". But today, I think maybe this English translation is more suitable and can be understood by more people in 2 1 century. Because if you really love your job, you are not working, but enjoying it. If you enjoy it, you will definitely have more enthusiasm, more time and more willingness to do more work. I may not want to go home on Friday, but I may want to go to work on Sunday. Then it may be difficult for you to do worse than others

What we can see is that if you can find what you like, you will have a happier life. So fellow students, if you haven't found what you like, my suggestion is to keep a curious heart and try different things. Then understand that your major is not exactly the same as your job. Do more consultation and find out what kind of company, environment and job you can choose after graduation. If it is your favorite major, cherish it and find a corresponding job in the future. If you are at a crossroads that you can choose, such as taking the postgraduate entrance examination and going abroad. At this time, you should choose a major that you really like, and maybe you can learn from the concept of cross-disciplinary cooperation just mentioned. It's not that I studied a major I didn't like in the past, so I'm going to switch from liberal arts to science. Maybe you can find a better way to cross the steps. If you don't like your major, you can also try to find a small major in your major, which may be what you like; Or you can find some opportunities in an interdisciplinary subject between a major you think you prefer and a major you don't like now. So in any case, if you can finally find something you love, you can give full play to your potential and become a loving worker needed by the 2 1 century.

The sixth type is active. This sentence was said by peter drucker. He said that hundreds of years later, historians will look back today and say that the most important thing in this century is not the Internet, but that people have a choice. If you have a choice, you should be proactive, and then you need to manage yourself. This is the most important point, and it is also the most important thing that happened when we changed from an industrial society to the present information society. A proactive person must be responsible for everything, because if you don't care, no one will care more than you, and no one knows better what you want to do. Before I came to college, everything was negative and decided by my parents. After entering the university, you should start to be responsible for everything. Not solving is also solving, and not making a decision is actually a decision. This decision is to let yourself go in a negative rather than positive direction.

When I publish a book, many people like me to write their motto in the book, and I will try my best to cooperate when I have time, but there is one sentence that I will never write, and that is silence is golden. Because in the current environment, everyone needs to sell themselves properly and let others know your achievements. Because if you don't express it, in fact, others will think that you have no thoughts. Of course, in the right environment, you can make appropriate expressions, not to rob others of opportunities, nor to be an over-represented bird. However, if you have some ideas, you must express them.

In this 2 1 century, everyone has ideas and information. Those who have the most information or ideas may get more attention. For example, when Google Camp was founded, one day the staff came to me and said that we had some ideas about this Google Camp. what do you think? What I remember clearly at that time was that I met some very active students when I was on a lecture tour in more than 20 colleges and universities across the country. I told him that you should go to the following four schools to meet the students who have hosted my activities, because I think they are proactive and in line with the spirit of Google Camp. I think they will give you a lot of ideas. Maybe they will become the backbone of our Google camp. So, if you are wondering, how did you choose these four schools? The big reason is that when I was making a lecture tour, they were the four schools that impressed me the most, the most active schools and the best students. This is a living example of what happened when Google Camp was founded today. We can see that it was because of such an active group of students at that time that we had the opportunity to set up this Google Camp in Zhejiang University today. A proactive person, he not only waits for opportunities, but also needs to seize opportunities and create opportunities for himself. This may be the place that international students and employees in China need to remind themselves most often. A while ago, we almost recruited more than 30 employees in China and worked for three or four months. One day when we were at a party, they asked me, Kaifu, do you have any suggestions for our new 30 apprentices? My answer is: I am very, very satisfied with the company's ideals, values and technical efforts. However, if you want to talk about something I hope you can do better in the future, I hope you can put forward your ideas more actively in the future.

Finally, I want to talk about optimists. American comedian bill cosby once said such a thing. We often say that whether a glass of water is half full or half empty depends on whether you continue to pour water into the glass or throw it away. If you continue to inject water, you will expect the water level to rise; If you are pouring water, you will think that the cup will be empty soon. In fact, what this tells us is a person's thoughts, an optimistic person or a pessimistic person. If you are an optimistic person, you will always tell yourself that the future will be better. Taiwan Province has an entrepreneur named Zhang Zhongmou, who is the chairman of Taiji Electric. He recently wrote an article, which I think contains some philosophical words. One of his friends asked him to write some words on the wall. Then Zhang Zhongmou told him that my handwriting was not good, but I wrote a few words for you casually, and then he wrote the words "I often think of one or two". How did his friend say "thinking a lot"? Then Zhang Zhongmou told him, Haven't you heard of it? We all say that nine times out of ten things in life are unsatisfactory. I want to tell you that I often think about one or two things that are satisfactory. He said that he had read many biographies of great men since he was a child, and he found a rule that all successful people have their own sufferings. Then their life is almost a true portrayal of life's unsatisfactory things in nine cases out of ten. But he found that these people succeeded because they kept positive thinking, and by "thinking about one or two things often", they were able to transcend suffering. Suffering has become the best nourishment in their lives and laid a good foundation for their future success. Therefore, the persistence, optimism and courage of these successful people in the face of suffering are the most important. The success or failure of life, more importantly, depends not on the fate of life, but on the moment of thought. Therefore, the real quality of life depends on whether you have an optimistic way of thinking, and your opinion is more important than this fact. In fact, there are many other reasons to be an optimistic person in the 2 1 century. Because 2 1 century is a more real-time and changeable environment, what we try will encounter many failures. We have all heard that Google is cool. For 20% of the projects, everyone has 20% of the time to do what they want. However, if we do a statistic, I think we will definitely find that most of the 20% projects we want to do are definitely failures. If you don't have a good attitude and can't objectively say that I have learned a lesson to help my next project, then you will soon be in a very depressed attitude. Therefore, Google not only does not punish failure, but also objectively encourages everyone to get up from failure. We should have a mentality. Frustration is not a punishment, but an opportunity to learn.

When I look back on my career, I think what I learned the most definitely didn't come from my success. On the contrary, when I was a doctor, I was rated as the worst teacher. I made a cool technology in a company, but it didn't work. As a result, the company was sold and the employees lost their jobs. I learned a lot, exceeding my achievements in speech recognition or other fields. Therefore, we must grasp every failure and let ourselves go through every painful period. Then we should have positive thoughts, stand up, face up to our mistakes and learn from them.

Finally, I make a conclusion: in the 2 1 century, we need hard-working students, but we need innovative and practical talents more. We need experts in various disciplines, but we need interdisciplinary synthesizers more. We need people with high IQ, but we need people with high EQ more. We need every student to understand efficiently, but you need efficient communication in the future.

Of course, you should find a hot job after graduation, but it is more important to love your job. Don't continue to be a passive and obedient student, but be a proactive student. Don't just be a cautious person, be an optimistic person.
