Content of guernica's works

This painting combines cubism and surrealism, showing pain, suffering and cruelty: on the right, a woman raised her hand and fell from the burning house, and another woman dragged her deformed leg to the center of the painting; On the left is a mother and her dead child; There is a soldier's body on the ground. The broken arrow is in his broken hand, and a growing flower is beside his sword.

The picture centers on the standing cow and the roaring horse. The painter combined the figurative technique with the cubist technique, and with the help of the combination of geometric lines, the work obtained a form with close internal structure and close connection, and accused the inhuman atrocities of the fascist war with exciting artistic language.

Guernica's Creative Background

At the beginning of 1937, Picasso was entrusted by Spain to create decorative murals for the Spanish Pavilion of the Paris World Expo. During the conception period,1April 26th, 937, the German Air Force bombed the Basque town of guernica in northern Spain. The three-hour German bombing caused many civilian casualties and razed guernica to the ground.

This crime of the German army aroused the condemnation of international public opinion. Picasso was indignant and decided to take this incident as the theme of mural creation to express his protest against war criminals and his condolences to those who died in this incident. So guernica was born.
