Where are the tonsils?

Tonsils are a pair of oval lymphoid organs located at the junction of digestive tract and respiratory tract. The mucosa here contains a lot of lymphoid tissue, which is the site of local immune response caused by frequent contact with antigens.

Before the age of 3, tonsil is an important immune organ of human body, which can produce lymphocytes and antibodies, has antibacterial and antiviral functions, and makes the whole body immune. For a healthy person, tonsil is like a gatekeeper, which plays a protective role. At the age of 6 to 7, the growth and development of tonsils in children reach the peak, and then they begin to shrink gradually, usually at the age of 1 1- 12, they can shrink to the state of adults.

Structural classification of tonsils:

1, palatine tonsil

The palatine tonsil is oval, and the mucosa on one side is covered with stratified epithelium, which sinks into the lamina propria to form a recess with 10 ~ 30 branches. There are a large number of diffuse lymphoid tissues and lymphoid nodules in the lamina propria around the recess.

2, pharyngeal tonsil

Pharyngeal tonsil, also known as adenoid, is located in the posterior pharyngeal wall, and its surface is covered with pseudo-stratified ciliated columnar epithelium without recess. The mucosa forms some longitudinal folds, and there are many lymphoid tissues in the lamina propria. Lymphocyte infiltration is also common in epithelium, and infiltrated epithelium often becomes stratified epithelium.

3, lingual tonsil

Tongue tonsil is located at the base of tongue and anterior pharyngeal wall, and its surface is covered with stratified epithelium and some shallow recesses. There is lymphocyte infiltration in epithelium, some lymph nodules and diffuse lymphoid tissue in lamina propria, which often makes the tongue mucosa face the surface.
