Chifeng, formerly known as Zhaowudamang, is a prefecture-level city and a provincial sub-central city under the jurisdiction of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Located in the southeast of Inner Mongolia, at the junction of Mongolia, Hebei and Liaoning provinces, it borders Chaoyang in the southeast, Chengde in the southwest, Tongliao in the east and Xilin Gol League in the northwest. Chifeng area was once the political, economic and cultural center of Liao Dynasty, and its two major capitals, Liaoshangjing and Liaozhongjing, were located in Balinzuoqi and Ningcheng County respectively.
Hongshan Culture site and Liao cultural site have been included in the preparatory list of world cultural heritage in China.
