3 Tao Xingzhi: What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?
Wisdom is generated, knowledge is learned. Mencius said, "By shooting at a hundred paces also: its to, er force; which, not er force." The man who can shoot an arrow can shoot to a hundred paces. The power to shoot to a hundred paces is the limit of generation. To be able to pass through a leaf of a poplar tree at a hundred paces is learned skill. This is the difference between wisdom and knowledge. Another example is speech: the ability to speak is generated and belongs to wisdom; to speak Chinese, Japanese, Berlin, or Lhasa is learned and belongs to knowledge. People are endowed with different gifts, and their generated wisdom is not uniform. Some are the wisest and some are the most foolish. But from the most foolish to the most intelligent, all the differences are gradually pushed up. If I were to arrange a thousand men in rows according to the size of their intelligence, we would know that the wisest are a few, and the stupidest are a few, and that each is not much different from the one who is near. And we find no difference between the wise and the foolish, but we find no difference between them.
