The Department of Computer Science at Southwest University is a department that was formed by the integration of the Computer Science and Technology program at the merger of the former Southwest Normal University and the former Southwest Agricultural University. Prior to the merger, the department had a long history of operation in both schools. At the time of the merger, the faculties of the two colleges were optimized and integrated, and the Department of Computer Science remains the department with the most outstanding disciplinary advantages in the new college.

The Department of Computer Science has one first-level discipline of computer science and technology, one provincial and ministerial key discipline of computer application technology, one demonstration center of computer science experimental teaching in Chongqing, three master's degree majors of computer system structure, computer software and theory, computer application technology, and one undergraduate major of computer science and technology.

Associate Head: Yang Ming Department of Educational Technology: It mainly cultivates senior specialists in the discipline of educational technology who can be engaged in designing, developing, applying, managing and evaluating instructional media and instructional systems in the field of informatization education. Department Chair: Qu Koon The Department of Information Management was founded in 1987, and its predecessor was the Tu Bo Specialized Course of Southwest Normal College in 1950. Department Chair: Zheng Hong The Department of Automation was established in 2002, and approved by the Ministry of Education in the same year to set up the automation major and enroll full-time undergraduates to be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Engineering, with more than 280 full-time undergraduates, whose specialty is the close integration of control theory and information technology to realize the acquisition, processing, transmission, application and control of information on various fields, processes, equipments and objects. Department Head: Qi Qi In the context of the country's vigorous development of high value-added, low resource consumption, non-polluting software industry, and considering the strategy of education first, the university successfully declared the undergraduate program of software engineering in 2002, and established the Department of Software Engineering in 2006.

The Department of Software Engineering has an annual enrollment of more than 100 students, and aims to cultivate high-quality software development, production and management talents with international standards, solid foundation and strong practical ability for various enterprises, research institutions and departments in the field of information technology.
