At the end of this five-year course, you'll have the knowledge, skills and behaviours you need to register with the General Dental Council. knowledge, skills and behaviors needed to register with the General Dental Council. This will enable you to complete your Foundation Year in Dentistry and eventually join the dental profession. The School of Dentistry is located at the University Dental Hospital on Cardiff University's Heath Park Campus, a 53-acre site shared with the University Hospital of Wales***. This is where the majority of clinical teaching takes place across our three undergraduate programs. With around 100 undergraduate students each year, we remain a relatively small dental school. We believe this helps promote a friendly and supportive sense of community and ensures the success of our students. In NSS 2015, 97% of students agreed that staff are good at explaining things. Studying at the only dental hospital in Wales, you will have the opportunity to work with patients of all ages and backgrounds and manage a wide range of dental conditions, including some of the more unusual oral cancers.
Clinical skills are developed in the College's recently refurbished £2.2 million Clinical Skills Laboratory, which simulates real-life clinical experiences to prepare you for and practice patient care. You will have the opportunity to train alongside dental therapists, dental hygienists and dentists to learn the same skills. This will help you understand how your role fits into the dental team environment, preparing you for when you are eligible and can start practicing. The dedicated dental library has a large collection of books and journals to help you with your studies. You'll also have access to the undergraduate IT suite as well as the new £1.5 million redevelopment of the lecture theatre and student social space on the Heath Park campus.
You will train specialist academic clinical staff and consultant teams both within the dental hospital and at a later stage of clinical staff working in primary care settings. The quality of teaching you will receive has recently been ranked amongst the highest in UK dentistry. The school scores a maximum of 100 points for its courses. Our students have one of the best employability records of any UK dental school, with 99% of undergraduate students gaining a UK Dental Foundation Training placement in 2015. The information provided to the School's Capped Numbers Scheme is based on information provided as part of the application process. If an applicant's fee status changes following the review of the information submitted, the School will honor the offer wherever possible. However, due to Welsh Government restrictions on quota numbers, the school may only be able to defer offers for the next academic year/entry period.
The Cardiff University School of Dentistry was ranked number one in the Guardian University Guide 2016 and the Times Good University Guide 2016, making it the best place to study dentistry in the UK. The course takes place at the only dental hospital in Wales. Students benefit from early clinical exposure in the first year. The course offers extensive clinical training in the University Dental Hospital clinics, in addition to outreach clinical teaching facilities in purpose-built education units, community dental clinics and regional general hospitals.
What attracted me to Cardiff School of Dentistry was the unique features of the program it offers. Firstly, it offers a degree in Dental Surgery as an honors degree, something no other school offers. Secondly, the entire semester's curriculum is very practical later on in working engineering, which is the envy of all other dental schools.
