The development of the new crown vaccine owes its success to Chen Wei, a distinguished Chinese scientist. The State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO) has confirmed that the new crown vaccine developed by the team of Chen Wei, an academician at the Military Medical Research Institute of the Military Academy of Sciences, together with Kangxinuo Bio***, has been granted a patent, marking an important breakthrough in this field in China. Chen Wei, a female biosecurity expert born in 1966 in Lanxi, Zhejiang province, holds a number of important positions, including academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the Institute of Bioengineering at the Military Medical Research Institute of the Military Academy of Sciences of the People's Liberation Army (PLA), as well as serving as vice chairman of the Chinese Association for Science and Technology and doctoral supervisor, and enjoying the rank of professional and technical second-class major general.
Chen Wei began her academic career at Zhejiang University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1988, and then studied at Tsinghua University, where she earned a master's degree in engineering in 1991 before joining the People's Liberation Army in the same year. She rose through the academic ranks at the Academy of Military Medical Sciences, earning her M.D. in 1998, and was promoted to researcher in 2002, becoming a Ph.D. supervisor the same year.In 2006, she became deputy director of the Institute of Microbial Epidemiology, and over the next few years Chen Wei's accomplishments continued to accrue, including winning the China Young Women Scientist Award, the rank of professional and technical major general, and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation In 2019, she was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and in 2020, she was awarded the national honorary title of "People's Hero" for her outstanding contributions to the fight against the Xinguan epidemic.
