The Eye Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medicine was newly built in 1986 with the approval of the Ministry of Health and is subordinate to the China Academy of Chinese Medicine. It is a comprehensive hospital with specialized features combining scientific research, medical treatment and teaching. The total size of the hospital is 300 beds, with a daily outpatient capacity of 1,000, and a total number of 605 employees, including 80 in the Eye Institute. Covering an area of 33,500 square meters and a building area of 28,000 square meters, the hospital was opened in May 1991 on a trial basis and was officially established in September 1994 with the approval of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Now the hospital is under construction, first set up a comprehensive outpatient department and 100 beds (including 28 beds for foreign guests), has been admitted to Japan, Malaysia, Australia, Bakistan, the Philippines, the United States and Taiwan and other countries and regions of the difficult eye patients for more than 300 times, achieved good results, and has been generally praised. The hospital treats eye diseases by combining traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese and western medicine, and has a group of specialists combining traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine composed of old, middle-aged and young people, among which the old specialist, Prof. Tang Youzhi, successfully performed cataract surgery for Chairman Mao Zedong in July 1975, and was awarded the "Order of Friendship of the Highest Level" of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) for his many years of treating the eye diseases of Chairman Kim Il Sung of the DPRK. He was awarded the "Friendship Medal of the Highest Grade" by the DPRK. Other specialists have been engaged in ophthalmology research for many years and have deep attainments in their respective fields. At present, the hospital has opened a special clinic for spring Cataract Conjunctivitis, Viral Keratitis, Glaucoma, Cataract, Central Retinal Vein Obstruction, Central Retinal Artery Obstruction, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinal Pigment Degeneration, Optic Nerve Atrophy, Macular Degeneration and other specialties.
The hospital owns various advanced clinical examination and medical equipments of ophthalmology in the 1990s, such as imported electrophysiology instrument, electric visual field meter, fluorescence imaging equipment, laser therapy instrument, A and B ultrasonic instrument for ophthalmology, as well as cataract ultrasonic emulsification instrument and vitreous cutter, etc. Imported from the United States, it is not only capable of accomplishing various kinds of common diseases at home and abroad but also of providing the best services to the patients. We are not only capable of performing various common surgeries at home and abroad, but also have made certain achievements in treating some difficult eyes by utilizing the characteristics of combined Chinese and Western medicine. At the same time, we have established cooperative relationships with the ophthalmology departments of major hospitals in Beijing, such as Tongren Hospital, Beijing Hospital Ophthalmology Department, Concord Hospital Ophthalmology Department, and Ophthalmology Department of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Peking University, etc., and have been able to learn from each other and communicate with each other in terms of clinical and basic researches, which has led to the significant development of combined Chinese and Western medicine ophthalmology.

The hospital was designated by the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine in March 1997 as the preparatory unit for the "National TCM Eye Disease Treatment Center", aiming to become a center for the prevention, treatment and scientific research of eye diseases in China. Under the care of leaders at all levels, the construction of the center proceeded smoothly, and in November 1997 won the bidding for two National Natural Science Foundation of China, a Chinese Medicine Administration of the scientific research projects.
In order to further highlight the treatment characteristics of the combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine, the hospital has set up the "Cataract Treatment Center", which is an institution specializing in cataract treatment under the support of the World Cataract IOL Foundation and in accordance with its recommended model. The purpose of the center is to apply the latest technology in the world to treat all types of cataracts.
