Suzhou (Su for short), known as Wu in ancient times, is a national historical and cultural city, a scenic tourist city, a national high-tech industrial base and one of the important central cities of the Yangtze River Delta urban agglomeration.
It borders Shanghai in the east, Zhejiang in the south, Taihu Lake in the west and the Yangtze River in the north, with a total area of 8,657.32 square kilometers. By the end of 2020, the city will have six districts and four county-level cities under its jurisdiction.
1949 After the liberation of Suzhou on April 27th, there were 13 town people's governments, and five district offices were established in September of the same year.
1954 Changshu was changed to a province directly under the central government, and it is still under the supervision of Suzhou Department. On August 25th 1958, Suzhou, the former provincial organ, was placed under the leadership of Suzhou District. Changshu City was revoked and merged into Changshu County.

Many ancient cultural sites have been discovered in Suzhou, especially Liangzhu culture in the late Neolithic period, including Zhaoling Mountain Site, Shaoqingshan Site, Chuodun Site, Caoxieshan Site and Luodun Site. Among them, Zhaoling Mountain Site was listed as one of the top ten archaeological sites in China by 1992.
